Del Potro: I am not the favorite today

The Argentinian is wisely shifting the role of the favorite on the other side even though he is improving with each round, just like last week in Stockholm. He has great record against Nishikori (4-9), but those matches are no compatible for comparison today

After retiring in his Tokyo, the Japanese took a short break. He was rehabilitating at his camp in Florida, and it seems it was successful. Upon arriving here he said that he thinks he is 100% fit, and his matches later confirmed that. 

It is interesting that he recorded both wins in a similar way, with a little 'tougher' first set after which he completely dominated the second set. Lorenzi, just like Lajovic, held up well at the start, but the 7-6 result is a bit misleading. The Japanese was the only one threatening in the entire set, but he wasn't efficient enough (0/6). He remained calm in the tiebreak, and then with two breaks calmly and deservedly won. 

- I played much better tennis today than in the first round. I did miss a lot of chances in the first set, but I remained focused and things fell into place. In the second set I got more aggressive and I have to say I am feeling much better - said Nishikori after reaching the quarter-final.

Del Potro

Del Potro came to Basel with the Stockholm title which only confirmed his great season. The organizers here did him a favor and moved his first round match to Wednesday and the question everyone asked was how much strength does he have left. Two days of rest were clearly enough and even though he had some minor problems at his serve, he still recorded a routine win over Haase. 

After that start a more relaxed approach was no longer an option, since he faced excellent Goffin in the second round. He wanted revenge for recent Shanghai when he lost after having a set and a break lead so his motivation was big here. It was definitely the derby of the round and a quality match that could easily have happened later in the tournament. It was tough at the start, and the Belgian even threatened more, but he wasn't efficient enough (0/4). The Argentinian used his only break point at 5-5 and turned the match in his favor.

- I played well in key moments and that was the of today's win - Del Potro commented on his 7th back-to-back win. 

Difficult draw that has been following him for the last few tournaments has continued here and his clash against Nishikori is definitely the biggest match of the quarter-final. He has great experience against the Japanese so far (4-0), but we should point out that they played their last head-to-head in 2012 and a lot has changed since then.

- Even though I am feeling good here and I have great experiences from tournaments, I am not the favorite today. I have a strenuous week behind me, but he is playing great and it will be a challenge - said Del Potro whose record against Top 10 players is 5-3 this season.
