Gilles Muller - Federico Delbonis (6:7 6:4 7:6)

Muller won 29/30 first serve points against Mayer

  • Published:

The Luxembourgian confirmed his big comeback against Dimitrov with a convincing win over Mayer. He sees Delbonis as a new chance for him to take the next step, even more so because he has positive experiences against him so far, and we should mention that the Argentinian 'spent' himself much more yesterday against Berankis

Delbonis

Even though his performance is often better than the result itself, the Argentinian came to Basel after nine defeats in the last ten matches. Not at all optimistic form in conditions that are not his forte, but he can still be dangerous on it. Kuznetsov witnessed that in the first round, he couldn't win a break, and then came a true thriller against Berankis.

The Lithuanian went into the match after a big win over Raonic, but he could not repeat that performance. Delbonis was a different kind of opponent, he forced rallies more, and that is where Berankis got more nervous. We can see that from the information that he won only 37% of second serve points (Delbonis at 70%), and he earned six break-point chances less. So we have to admit that the Argentinian deserved to win (by 16 points), but he could have won more convincingly since he lost serve for the set in both first and second set. This way he was on the court for two and a half hours.

Muller

The experienced Luxembourgian did his job much faster, more efficient. He defeated always unpleasant Mayer in only one hour. But Mayer was not playing well, Muller dominated the match, and he had almost perfect serving day. He hit 15 aces and won 29/30 first serve points (96%), He did not give a single break chance the entire match, he won 3 breaks and calmly and deservedly advanced to the quarterfinal.

He now has his second clash against Delbonis against whom he has god memories. In Tokyo (which is very fast) two years ago he won routinely and considering everything he showed here, we can say that he is rightfully the favorite here today. His record against players between 31st and 70th position this year on hardcourt is excellent 7-1,
