Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - Daniel Evans (6:7 6:2 6:4 6:4)

Evans beat two Top 10 players this season

  • Published:

The well-experienced Tsonga is the favorite here but the Brit has never been doing better

Tsonga

Tsonga beat Monteiro and Lajovic in the opening two rounds. There was some struggle in the first round but he sailed through the second round. The Sock match, was however, the first real test but Tsonga displayed quality. There were no breaks in the first set. Jo was more dangerous on serve in the second set, he broke his opponents for the first time at 5-5 and then once again early in the third set. It seemed like he was headed for a win as he didn't allow any break points. However, he failed to confirm the break and then missed out on a break point in the third set at 4-0, had 4-0 in tie break and missed out on a break point. That didn't affect him too much as he took a 3-0 lead in the 4th set and, after saving two break points when serving for the match, managed to record the win.

- It was a good match. I wish it ended earlier but he did well. I'm happy with how I played. My mind sometimes wanders and I tried to be focused today. That is why I did well - the French player said.

Tsonga has a final, a semifinal and two quarterfinals from previous Australian Opens. However, he lost in the 4th round in the last two seasons. He is now to face Evans, who are never been doing better.

Evans

The Brit is out of contract with Nike, which means he had to buy his own shirts for this tournament. That's didn't stop him from beating Cilic and confirming a win over home favorite Tomic. It is really impressive how he played. He controlled pace, he was brave, went on the net and impressed once again. There were some bad moments, especially in the second set when he faced two set points. But, he pulled through and ended up winning another tie-break in the third set.

- It was tough. Bernard is a tricky opponent. He's unconventional and it was tough from the start. I'm happy I pulled through three tough sets - Evans said. He is now to face Tsonga:

- This will be a step forward. I've been watching him on TV growing up. I saw a lot of his QF matches at Grand Slams. It will be different to play him, though.

Given his quality, form and momentum, Evans has nothing to be afraid of, especially because he beat a Top 10 player here (Cilic). He is 3-0 with Top 10 players and has won two matches against Top 20 opponents (Thiem, Cilic), which shows just how much he can do. He never played Tsonga before.
