Guillermo Garcia-Lopez - Jack Sock (4:6 1:6)

GGL finally won

  • Published:

Sock wasn't great at the start, while GGL had horrible 0-11 record against Top 50 players last season

Sock

He was in the Top 20 briefly at the start of the season, and we have to admit he has done a good job. After winning the Hopman Cup title, he won his second ATP tournament in Auckland, and despite the defeat to Tsonga, he played well at his first Grand Slam.

He didn't leave a great impression at the start here, but he defeated Albot in straight sets and avoided complications. He won the first set by a break, and then we have seen a domination of serves until tiebreak where Sock won the match. It wasn't very convincing. but it is the win that counts, and great first serve percentages, which is standard for the American this season.

Last year he had 16-4 on hardcourt against players outside the Top 50, with only one slip-up (Daniel).

GGL

After an incredible 10 match losing run without winning a set, there is finally some light at the end of the tunnel for him. He ended his losing run with a comfortable win over Brown.

It was a match that gives us hope that the player who was once at the verge of the Top 20 will wake up from his lethargy. In the entire match, he gave his opponent only one break point and with four points behind the first serve. It was a performance that reminded us of the old GGL, with the fact that Brown is a peculiar guy capable of self-destruction.

In his career he recorded over 80 Top 50 wins, but he was unsuccessful at hardcourt last season (0-11), and the question is how much momentum will the first round win give him. They each won one of their two head-to-heads on clay so far.
