Pablo Carreno-Busta - Joao Souza (6:3 6:2)

Souza has 6 Top 50 wins

  • Published:

The Spaniard was convincing against players outside of Top 100 (12-0) but the Brazilian won the last h2h

Busta

He has had a reputation of a player for clay court long enough before displaying quality in other conditions last season. He first won a title in Winston Salem, then indoors in Moscow. He's never been ranked better and was one of the 32 seeded players at AO.

When it comes to DC, his win over Mektic was the crucial one. He was obviously bursting with confidence as he reached Buenos Aires semifinals and later lost to Dolgopolov. The Ukrainian won the close first set and Busta couldn't recover from that.

He was 12-0 against players outside of Top 50 (5-0 without dropping a single set on clay court).

Souza

The Brazilian opened the season with two defeats. Hard court is not his favorite surface but more was expected from him, especially since his opponents weren't invincible. He lost the first round in Happy Valley to Bachinger but in 3 sets. After that, he lost to Ghem in AO qualifiers (6-8) in the third set.

There was no reaction as he changed surfaces. He recorded a defeat in Quito first round and then had a fiasco in Buenos Aires qualifiers against Dutra Silva.

He put up a good fight against Top 50 players throughout his carrier (6-20). With all that being said, we need to note that the Brazilian won the last h2h while they played three sets in previous two.
