Atlanta seeking victory to gain confidence

Although this game is of no importance because they secured second seed position in the East, it is important Atlanta ends the losing streak and enter the playoffs on the positive note

In the previous round, San Antonio Silver Stars and Atlanta Dream played a match of no importance. Texans had succumbed to numerous injuries and lost strength in the last third of the season. With a win tonight, they can jump over Tulsa for the fifth place in the West. But, as that only lessens their chances of choosing first in the draft and snatching Chimney Ogwumike, the question is are they motivated for it.


They are in a negative streak with four defeats. The last one came on Friday in Phoenix. It was a match in which hosts jumped to a  9-0 and 15-2 lead, and showed the Silver Stars they have no chance. In the middle of the third quarter, visitors got as close as -4, but Phoenix then went on a 26-2 rampage to set things straight. Without three of their best players, they failed to show with a better game. Danielle Adams and Shenise Johnson scored 11 points, while Jayne Appel added 6 points and 10 rebounds.

- I told the team I just wish I could have had them a little fresher. I think we expended a lot of energy to put us down seven at the end of three and then in the fourth quarter we just didn't have the legs to finish - said Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes.

Things would have been different if coach Hughes could count on Sophie Young, Becky Hammon and Danielle Robinson. But neither will be in the team tonight when they host Atlanta, a team that beat the by 26 points.

Regardless of the outcome of tonight's encounter, Atlanta has secured the second place in the East. In the case of their defeat and if Indiana and Washington win, all three would be tied on 17-17. But Atlanta has better score against Indiana and Washington, and therefore in the first round of the playoffs will have home-field advantage. They entered the season with great 10-1 streak, but later on were sidetracked by injures. But thanks to the deadly duo of Angel McCoughrty ( 22.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.8 steals ) and Erika De Souza (13.1 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.8 blocks ) they were able to defend the second place.

They have lost their last three games and would welcome a win tonight to regain some confidence before the playoffs. After a humiliating defeat in Connecticut (hosts playing without 6 of 7 best players), on Friday they lost in Chicago. They played a very good game and  five minutes from the end had a five points advantage. But they failed to maintain it and Chicago won by being calm on the free throw line. They managed to keep up the rebounding and control the paint, but the hosts shot better from outside and that was the decisive factor. Again Angel McCoughrty was the best player (29 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals). Erika De Souza scored another double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, and Hayes, Bentley and Thomas were also in double digits. But it was not enough for a win against Chicago led by Epiphanny Prince with 29 points.

- Prince really stepped up in the fourth quarter for them, made some big shots. We still fought hard and tried to attack the basket and make things happen. We came out empty on some of those possessions - Atlanta coach Fred Williams said.

Tonight's rivals are weaker than Chicago and should cut short the losing streak. They are still without Sancho Lyttle, but on the positive side, Armintie Herrington could return.

In the last round San Antonio does not have any motive to win the game because it would only ruin their chances for their first draft choice-Atlanta on the other hand wants to win to get into the playoffs. Hosts are playing without three of their best players and Atlanta will know how to take advantage of that, led by league's top scorer McCoughry. I'm confident that the guest team will win this match, and it will be expressed with greater difference than the margin of 5.5 that was set.
