Manchester United - Crystal Palace (2:0)

Vidic: We must improve in attack

  • Published:

Moyes needs a resounding victory to calm the evil spirits after a bad start. Crystal Palace will be without its manager.

After three tough matches ( Swansea, Chelsea and Liverpool ) Manchester United has an easier job against the newcomers Crystal Palace. David Moyes' team was defeated in the last round against Liverpool and rumors  immediately started that United does not have a strong enough squad to defend the titles. One defeat means nothing, especially not against Liverpool who always play with full force against rivals from Manchester. If Moyes and the Red Devils win on Saturday, they will buy some peace of mind, which is no small thing. Any result other than victory would prove the aforementioned theory. United is by far the stronger team, with almost all of the players from last season and it is a matter of time before they get into right shape. Perhaps as early as this Saturday against Palace.

- I do not judge a game by the goals scored. I think matches against Liverpool and Chelsea were solid, we left very little space for our opponents. We do not like poor conversion, but the season is long and we have many matches in front of us, some very hard. I will not say that lack of scoring concerns us, but we need to improve some things - said the Red Devils captain Nemanja Vidic.

Vidic also commented on the "behavior" of manager David Moyes. The media speculated that Moyes screamed at the players after Chelsea and Liverpool matches, referring to their poor performances.

- So far he was not yelling and screaming in the locker room, because at the moment everything is going smoothly. Players are training good and he has no need to react like that. We hope it will remain like that - added Nemanja Vidic.

Belgian national team player and former Everton player Marouane Fellaini should have his debut for the new team. He is the only real reinforcement Moyes brought from his former club, so it is to be expected. Fellaini should play in the midfield, so the question is whom will he replace.

Rooney is still injured and will not play, so Danny Welbeck should  team up with van Persie. Young Wilfried Zaha could also start, and Chris Smalling should replace injured Rafael and Jones on the right flank.

Ian Holloway, the eccentric Crystal Palace manager will not be on the bench at the Old Trafford this Saturday due to a two games suspension earned for his harsh complaints after 1-0 defeat. Holloway often prepares his teams very well for United, like when he managed Blackpool in the Premier League. Crystal  Palace has one win and two losses after the first three rounds, with 4-4  goal difference. They will play attacking football, even against the big favorite as Manchester United.

Palace's problem is that they failed to get reinforcements manager Holloway wanted. Media then came up with the story that Holloway is angry with the owner Steve Parish, who denied it in an interview and gave Holloway and the players his full support.

- We are very satisfied with the direction the club going, we are very happy with the way he runs the club, all the players support him in training - owner Steve Parish said after the "alleged" disagreement with the manager.

Holloway will be sidelined for two matches ( plus 18,000 pounds fine ). But he does not think it would create a problem for him and his team, although he sincerely repented.

- I am disappointed in myself and how I act sometimes. I have to learn some restraint, but I only do that because I am passionate. But it will not affect us. I can be in the locker room, in the hotel, or with them. I am just suspended from the match, I will not be able to run along the pitch. But I will have a microphone and will be in contact with the bench, with a good view of the game, which might help - said manager Ian Holloway before the game.

As many as eight Crystal Palace players are injured. But not all are important for the first team, so no big worries for Holloway.

Updates

  • 14.09.2013. 13:18h Rooney will play after all
Even though he was listed as injured and wasn't supposed to play against Crystal Place today, after the starting line-ups were announced, his name appeared in Manchester United's starting 11. With him in the line-up, the Red Devils definitely gain an extra dimension in the attack.

As it says in the intro, finally an "easy" game for United. Certainly easier than the matches they played recently. After the draw against Chelsea and defeat to Liverpool, this is the match where the Red Devils should prove the critics wrong. Crystal Palace doesn't have the firepower to make life difficult for United, unless the Manchester team underestimates them and doesn't go into the match fully concentrated. Since they are in a so called "crisis", I expect David Moyes' players to go all out from the beginning and break down the visitors in the first half. The next match for United is a local derby against City, and there is nothing better for boosting morale than a resounding win. As the captain Vidić points out, the defence is pretty good, but the attack has yet to start firing on all cylinders. This is the perfect opportunity for them. De Gea is confident in goal, and playing in front of a packed Old Trafford has never been easy, and it certainly won't be for today's visiting team.
