The Greeks see this game as the finals

The Greeks see Zizis and Sloukas as a solution for Goran Dragic, and Bozo Maljkovic could assign Joksimovic to guard Spanoulis, after he guarded Belinelli. This result of this game will depend on point guards

The Slovenian team, carried by a full arena in Stozice, made a huge step towards the quarter-finals. They've beaten the undefeated Italian team and opened their door to to final rounds. The game was nerve-wrecking, since a lot was expected and a lot was at stake. Slovenia managed to a get a solid lead a few times but Italians kept coming back until the final moments when nobody was able to stop the Dragic brothers and the gang.

The key to victory was a high number of Slovenian offensive rebounds which Italians simply couldn't match. Slovenia had 17 rebounds more and 15 of them were in offense after which they usually scored which demoralized the Italians.

Another important aspect was the Slovenian defense which functioned rather well, despite allowing 77 points, which Jaka Lakovic later explained:

-They play the game with a lot of pick'n'rolls, they have great shooters and it was important to have an aggressive game against their back court and we did good. We knew exactly how to play our defense and we showed that on the court.


Maljkovic said throughout the tournament that the defense was the most important aspect of his team's game, and this was no different against Italy. He was happy with what he saw, and this means the defense was excellent:

- It is hard to prepare for the game against Italy, they are a very tricky team. We were dominant in the paint, and our defense was great. We've lost a lot of energy, but we got an important win.

The best player for Slovenia was Goran Dragic, as usual, who closed this chapter right after the game and started thinking about games to come:

- We have to forget this game as soon as possible, as we are facing an even harder game against Greece. I would like to thank our fans who were perfect once again.

The euphoria in Slovenia is witnessed in the fact that around 500,000 people watched the game against Italy on their television. The arena will be full against Greeks and the atmosphere should be ecstatic. 

They will have a completely different game against Greece than against Italy. Greece are much stronger in the paint and Slovenia will not be as dominant as against Italy.

- The Greeks are a very tough team, they play very smart basketball. We will have to play even better than yesterday if we want to get a new win - said Maljkovic.

Both teams have great defense, and the Greek offense relies on Spanoulis. The aggressive Slovenian guards will have a lot to do, but they showed what they're able to do against Spain who probably has the best backcourt on this tournament.

If their defense manages to keep the Greeks under 70 points, their chances increase dramatically as Dragic might give Greeks a horrid time in the transition, which was visible yesterday when the Spaniards outran the slower Greeks on several occasions. 

Some people wrote off Greeks too early, and they are on their best when people do that. They started the game with 0-2 and 16-26 in the first 10 minutes when the Furia scored four 3-pointers from 5 attempts and Greece looked shaky.

The crucial moment happened during the second quarter - Marc Gasol got his third foul and was sent on the bench until half-time. One can assume that the Spanish coach Orenga gave the Greeks a chance to get back into the game when he didn't pull Gasol to the bench after his second foul, and the clever Spanoulis used that and forced the third foul with constant attacks through Gasol.

- We've had a great game, we didn't give up and we fought our way to victory. I think we broke them with out defense and energy. It was a good win. But we are still in hell and we have to keep walking -  said Greek coach Andrea Trinchieri.

The Italian made some interesting moves. He didn't put Fotsis in the game at all, he gave Mavrokefalidis only five minutes, and it was later found out he had groin problems. Kavvadas  started by guarding Gasol, which he didn't do so well, but managed to gave him a few bruises and make him a bit more nervous which was one of the reasons for Gasol's fouls.

The goal was to bring the game in the final rounds and Greeks don't lose then. Especially not Vassilis Spanoulis, just give him the ball and you've got yourself a win. It was a festival for Spanoulis and Bourousis who drove the Spanish defense crazy. Spanoulis finished the game with 20 points, and Bourousis with 10, but one should also mention good performance by Bramos both in offense and defense.

- We are here for three finals now. We won the first one, then we have the second one. If we don't win the second one, it will be like we didn't win today - said Spanoulis.

The Greeks have come back from the dead and now they're very dangerous. Trinchieri  has isolated his team, no more media, and it doesn't matter if it's because he wants his team to have some peace, or if he's angry and the Greek media.

- In my opinion it all depends on us. If we play the same way we played against Spain, I am sure we can win. Slovenia is a team full of energy, and if we manage to match them in that aspect I am sure we can win. We are in for a tough weekend - said Printezis.

It seems the Greeks have sensed their opponent's fear and that's when they're the most dangerous. They have a great defensive option for Dragic in Zizis and Sloukas, and Bourousis could spent a lot of time on the court. Mavrokefalidis  is injured and Eurobasket is over for him and Trinchieri has no reason to hide the defensive problems of Bourousis since Begic and Vidmar are not especially dangerous after the pic. Kavvadas is surely an option for 10 minutes on the center, but this game will be controlled mostly by Spanoulis and Bourosis.

After doing an MR last night, Mavrokefalidis is definitely out of the rest of Eurobasket, which means the rotation at position 5 is reduced. The options left at the centre position are Kavvadas and Kaimakoglu, but each of them has a flaw. Kavvadas is too young to contribute in a crucial match, whereas Kaimakoglu has mostly played on position 4 in the tournament. With him at position 5, the Greeks would have rebounding issues against Begic and Vidmar. Bourosis' match time has been small so far due to his problems defending the pick and roll play. The Slovenes do not play like that so Trinchieri will not give up on points that Bourousis can bring just because his defence is weak. With Spanoulis in play, Bourousis is a much better player, his attacking arsenal is great, he is a threat both when he is facing the basket and when he is turned away from it. Borousis should easily go over this margin in the estimated 25-30 minutes of play.
