Brazil - China (3:1)

Brazil are after their tenth World Grand Prix title

  • Published:

This is a meeting between the last year's winner and runner-up. Brazil have the experience, but China are very dangerous. They're a young team with a bright future ahead

We'll be able to witness the clash of the titans on the first day of the tournament in Sassari. These two teams met in the final of last year's edition of World Grand Prix. These two teams met in Sapporo on the last day of the final tournament to decide who will win this coveted tournament. Brazil didn't allow any surprises to happen, and beat China 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, and 25-20).

The Brazilian team didn't change much, compared to last year. Fabiana is no longer there, so the younger Camila Brait took over as libero. That is, besides Jacquline being back on team after giving birth, the only change compared to last year. Brazil, looking at the list, seem powerful. They can't count on Tandara, who got injured, but that is not something they can't make up for.

- The Grand Prix will be our preparation for the World Championship. We have to do well, we have a tough debut against China ahead, but we are well prepared - Jacqueline said.

Their form isn't top level yet, the four friendly-matches against the States in July prove it well. Brazil lost all four of those, but they were not particularly worried about it. They will be getting better, with the team being at their best in the World Championship. That doesn't mean the Grand Prix is on the back burner, they do want the tenth title.

- China have very talented players. Their game is based on offense and fast combinations. I'm worried about the young Zhu, who is already one of the best offense players in the world. We have to serve well, and the cooperation between block and defense will have to be good too. We will have to be twice as careful about China's fast game - Brazilian coach Ze Roberto said.

China did very well in this competition last year, but as the season advanced, they were getting worse. They didn't win a medal in the Asian championship last September. A good performance at Montreux Masters in Switzerland opened their season, and even though they didn't have the best possible team available, they won position four.

After that, they hosted a tournament and won it. Belgium, Thailand, and Dominican Republic were other participants. They lost only two set then, proving they're on the right track. The form is now quite good, and many see them as one of the favorites for winning the World Grand Prix. China's key players are captain Rouqi Hui, the aforementioned Zhu Ting, and Xu Yunli. They have good team spirit, with coach Lang Ping being their biggest star. She won the Olympic and World gold as a player, and Olympic gold with US and China as a coach.
