Legia Warsaw - Celtic (4:1)

Everything open in the clash of Norwegian coaches

  • Published:

An interesting fact is that both the Scottish and Polish champions are managed by Norwegians. The tradition would suggest that Celtic are slight favorites to go through, but that's only in theory

Last Wednesday in Dublin, Legia managed to vent their frustrations accumulated in the first few games as things finally opened up for them in the middle of the second half and goals started flying in, which made their final win much more convincing that one might expect after the first game against St. Patricks. Their last league game played in Krakow on Saturday showed that the Polish champions are slowly getting into the right form as they beat Cracovia, despite the fact that coach Henning Berg used a squad with only four players from the initial line-up in Ireland.

The only things that's bothering them at this point is the condition of their reliable keeper Kuciak, who sustained a minor injury in Krakow, and they will surely wait until the last moment to register him for this game if necessary. Berg is not shying away from the fact that Celtic will be a true test of Legia's capabilities:

- Celtic are a great team with massive experience in the Champions League, they've even beaten Barcelona once, and they're better than us at the moment and have a bigger budget which allows them to bring in the best players. In any case, we couldn't have asked for a more attractive opponent in this stage of competition, I'm sure that the atmosphere tonight will be great and that we'll be a worthy adversary for the Scots.

Berg has also emphasized that he expects an open game from his compatriot on the other end:

- Ronny Deila is a good coach, his teams generally play offensively, and I assume that's they way they'll go out against us.

Celtic's task in the second round wasn't too difficult as Reykavik, the champions if Iceland, were just a warm-up for the things to come. And judging by their coach Deila, their form is on the rise:

- We are working very hard every day to do better in each game, we've presented ourselves against Reykavik very well, but we have a lot more to do, most of all in terms of understanding what we want to do on the pitch. The players' dedication in training gives me hope that we can do a huge part of our goal of getting into the next round in Warsaw, it would be great to score an away goal.

It's clear to Deila that this match could be decided by the finest of details:

- Legia are definitely one step above the Icelanders, I'm sure we have two interesting games to play. Unlike us, they have played more competitive games, but we have more European experience in general, and if you take all things into consideration, it should be very tight.

Center-back Mikael Lustig reflected the view of the dressing room.

- The away games in European competitions are always difficult and this will be no exception, but we believe in our capabilities. We're not in top form just yet, but as the time goes on, we are getting more and more used to the demands of our new coach and we are now more rational when we lose the ball and we are ready for the upcoming challenges.

In comparison to their fixture against Reykavik, Celtic will have two more forwards as Stokes recovered from injury and Jo Inge Berget was brought on loan from Cardiff. Only Forrest and team captain Brown are still out of action.
