The race for weaker opponents in the relegation battle

  • Published:

Both the Czechs and the Russians have a 2-0 score in Group G and the winner of this game will play against the team with the weakest ranking from Groups E and F on Friday

Things are pretty much clear in Group G ahead of the last round. Czech Republic and Russia will play head to head game to decide the top spot in their group and get the easiest possible opponent in the battle to stay in Division A, possibly Poland or BiH.

Both the Czechs and the Russians have a 2-0 score. The Czechs have struggled against the English and they beat Belgium with less problems. It was a great offensive performance from them, their first one on this tournament. They scored 24 points in the first period, but they didn't get a major lead. Until the end of first half, they were up by only +4, but the third period was crucial as the scored 30 points and got a 14-0 run. They slipped up a bit in the final period but it was clear they can't squander this huge lead.

Their center Puršč scored 22 points and winger Svoboda scored 16, while Škranc added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Their overall field goal was 50%, three-pointers 9/19 and they had 19 rebounds more.

Now they're facing a clash against Russia. This generation of these teams played at the EC for cadets two years ago and Russia got two wins, although the second one was by a very tight margin (69-67). Russia got their second win on this tournament yesterday.

Their English peers were not a too difficult obstacle for the limited Russian team who did their best here. After the first period, the Russians took the lead by 20-11 and they got the double-digit lead until half-time, which reached even +24 in the last period.

They made plenty of rotation and none of their players got more than 28 minutes. Their best player Karpenkov (center) played for 20 minutes and got 11 points and 8 rebounds. Starateljev got 12 points. The Russian lost the aerial battle but they had less turnovers and had a better field goal.

They should have the advantage today, although they've had plenty of ups and downs so far. However, a soft Czech defense should suit them.
