Manchester United - Sunderland (2:0)

United looking for a payback

  • Published:

Manchester lost two home games to Sunderland last season. A win now would see them claim 3th place

Even though they set out to meet Swansea with only one defeat in 19 games, many claimed that United's performances away aren't good enough and as it turned out, they were right. Herrera scored an opened for United 28 minutes into the game but Swansea managed to equalize only two minutes later, take the lead mid-second half and win in the end.

Following the game, Louis van Gaal claimed that the shock caused by the goal conceded destroyed his team's moral but those are just pretexts. It is very clear that Van Gaal needs to change something because grabbing a spot in Champions League without road wins won't be easy.

Manchester United are doing far better at Old Trafford, having recorded 10 wins in the last 13 championship matches this season. The meeting with the unconvincing Sunderland should be a new chance for getting three points and reaching spot 3 at least for a day until Arsenal-Everton match tomorrow.

- It would be a huge disappointment for us to not finish as one of the top 4 teams. We're just as disappointed with the defeat in Swansea but I don't want to criticize our defense and their mistakes that much. I think we need to score more goals away - Louis van Gaal said, confirming what everyone is thinking - he is taking too little risk and Van Persie's injury won't help either.

- Van Perise injured his ankle and I think it would take him a few weeks to recover. It's the kind of an injury that can only be aggravated if not healed properly and we need to be careful about it - United's boss said. He is hoping that Facao could pitch in more by season's end.

- Like in any home game, we expect three points from Sunderland even though we know that the home team is tough and plays good defense - Van Gaal said. The aforementioned defeat from last season was the only one Manchester had in the last 25 head-to-head Premier League matches with Sunderland (won 18 times).

Sunderland have only 4 wins and staggering 13 draws so far. They have scored 22 goals in 26 games, which makes them the second worst productive team in the league. The last round's match against West Bromwich finished as a goalless draw with Sunderland not creating a single serious attempt. Manager Poyet can be very worried because he has three away games to do in the next 4 rounds.  His team will play only 5 home and 7 away games till season's end.

Sunderland are now only 3 points above the danger zone and Old Trafford has proved to be a very tough venue for away teams even though Sunderland won the key game in their battle to avoid relegation last season in May. They lost the League Cup final on penalties before that and Poyet is more than happy to look back at those successful games, no matter how difficult it might be do repeat them.

- I always felt good at Old Trafford while I played at Chelsea. With Tottenham though, I would always lose. As a coach, I want my players to be fearless once they step out on the pitch and that they show what they are capable of. We did it twice last season and both times reached our goals - Poyet said. He can't count on midfielders Jones, Giaccherini and Rodwell today.

- United acquired some exquisite players and they will be very motivated to make amends for the Swansea defeat and for what we did to them last season. Van Gaal is constantly changing game system and that's a bit tricky when you have tactics to prepare but we just need to be tough and try and play out best game - Gustavo Poyet said.
