Melsungen - Goppingen (27:32)

One of the most important matches in the fight for Europe

  • Published:

This is a direct fight for the fifth place which will surely lead the winners to the EHF Cup

EHF is a poor and lame organization from which only IHF is worse. We have to mention this in the intro for this meeting because Melsungen and Goppingen are fighting for the place in the EHF Cup, but no one really knows which place from the Bundesliga will be the last place that leads to Europe. Especially now when Fuchse took the EHF title. Everyone's using words like "probably" and "supposedly", no one knows the details for certain. The problem is definitely in the number of Germans for the Champions League; that won't be known until the Champions League Final Four is over. Probably not even then, but only when EHF distribute the numerous wildcards they're preparing for the summer. What's 99% sure is that the fifth team of the Bundesliga will head int the EHF cup, and Melsungen and Goppingen, next to Fuchse who are defensing champions, are the main candidates.

The situation on the table is the following: Goppingen have 38 points and 33 matches. Melsungen have two points less and one match less. Fuchse have 35 points and only 31 matches.

Fuchse seem to be in a better situation because of a smaller number of matches, but we should take into consideration the fact that they're playing against Magdeburg at home, and then they're up for away matches against Lowen and Erlangen. Later they're up for another home match against Flensburg in the last round. So, three teams out of the first five, among whom Magdeburg and Flensburg are fighting for the Champions League. Since they don't have any other imperatives because of the European trophy they've won, Fuchse shouldn't mess into this too much.

Whoever wins today will have big chances to come to the fifth place, especially if it's Melsungen. Except for tying with Goppingen and having one less match, they will have a 2-0 record in head-to-heads. They won the first one this season easily with 31-26.

They're coming into this match after beating solid Erlangen (37-24).

- This match has a double meaning; except Europe, we want to show where we belong - coach Roth pointed out who returned to Erlangen after an illness and a missed away math against Minden. Today he'll lead his team.

- Without a doubt, this is one of the most important matches of the season for us - said Axel Geerken.

Melsungen live for defenses and their goalkeepers' excellent editions, especially Appelgren's, after which Alendorf and Sellin score a lot of goals from counterattacks. That's their strength they need today because their offense, especially after their first middle back Fahlgren injured himself who is substituted by Vuckovic, doesn't look convincing.

On the other hand, Goppingen's biggest strength is their middle block Spath - Beljanski, with Prost on the goal. Last week in 56th minute they were at 27-15 against Lubbecke. They can win only when their defense is at its best. Offensively they're quite thin and prone to long periods of inertness. They're without their right back Nyokas who mised Lubbecke, and he'll miss today's match as well.

His alternative Lobedank played very well and scord six out of nine shots which is a rarity since he was very bad in previous meetings. It's worth to point out the return of the left back Fontaine after a break which lasted a couple of months. We shouldn't expect him to play 30 or 40 minutes, but he could definitely help out the Sesum - Kraus - Kneule trio who will do most of the job, next to Lobedank.
