Celta Vigo - Levante (3:0)

Levante were the first team to sack the coach this season in La Primera

  • Published:

The atmosphere on the two teams is completely opposite, and the only thing the away team can hope for is that the positive shock of a changing coaches can help them somehow

Celta suffered their first defeat in the seventh round against Villarreal, but managed to win a point in the very next match, a tough away in Bilbao. Athletic is in a crisis this season, but they still managed to play their best against Celta and get the lead first, however, they could not close the deal. The away team from Vigo knew how to take advantage of that and reached a big point when Nolito scored, which leaves them in the upper part of the ranking ladder.

The away team visiting Celta today will be Levante, who've had a disastrous start to the season with just five points after eight rounds played. The red-blues from Valencia got demolished 5-0 against Real Madrid last weekend, and the latest defeat saw them plummet to the penultimate position. Although the defeat against Real was not unexpected, it was still too much for the management, and Jose Luis Mendilibar became the first replaced coach in La Primera this season, while Lucas Alcaraz arrived to step in. We remember Alcaraz as the coach who took over Granada in January and managed to keep them in the league, but after achieving that goal announced he will not be extending his contract with the Andalusian club.

Home team's coach Eduardo Berizzo spoke about the change of coaches in Levante:

- I don't believe Levante will change the way they play at Balaidos since Alcaraz took over. They will probably play with a dense defense setup, trying to get possession and counterattack. The change in coaching may have changed everything we know about Levante, but I still don't believe things changed in any drastic way over such a short period.

The usual center back Andreu Fontas missed the away bout in Bilbao due to card accumulation, and got injured in the mean time as well, so he will once again be out of the lineup. Joining him is forward Augusto Fernandez, who lost the favor of his compatriot Berizzo, as well as midfielder Borja Oubina, who did not play in the championship so far this season. A much more serious absence than the above mentioned two is the Chilean midfielder Fabian Orellana, who played all eight previous rounds, scoring three goal during the period and assisting once. He will also sit this one out due to accumulated cards.

Alcaraz did not spend much time with the press after taking over, and only commented briefly:

- The basic goal is to stay in the league. We have a tough away match in Vigo coming up, made even more difficult by all the surrounding circumstances, but we'll try to get the maximum out of it.

One of the reasons behind the poor results for Levante were also the numerous injuries that plagued the team at the start of the season. Nothing changed in that area, the list of absentees still contains Tono, David Navarro, Ivan Lopez, Martins and Vyntra.
