A win secures Athletic qualification for Europe

Visitors have reached their goals for this season and coach Marcelino barely has 11 starters for this game

Athletic were outside of positions leading into Europe for only one round before managing to get back with the help of today's opponent. However, the Basque team needs to get credit as well for what they've done in the away game against Elche. They were two goals down at half time and the score didn't change until 80 minutes in the game when Ager Aketxe scored the first goal for Athletic, which was followed by an equalizer by Mikel San Jose only 3 minutes before the time was up. Inaki Williams scored another goal well into the injury time to get Athletic back in spot 6 in the table. Thigs are very straightforward now. A win would see them finish as the 7th team in the table and since they already made it into Spanish Cup final, Europa League would be secured today.

Coach Valverde agreed to a contract extension this week:

- I'm happy the club always had faith in me. Even when we were struggling president Urrutia suggested that we carry on. It seemed at that moment that our goals will not be achieved and I didn't agree to a new contract back then. However, we have improved since and we're one step away from Europe. Things are different now since we're only one win away from Europa League qualification and we'l do anything to make that happen.

Valverde cannot count only on Muniain, who is out with a major injury, and Ibai Gomez. Andoni Iraola and Etxeita are back on the roster today. 

Villareal were pretty easy-going about the last week's meeting with Malaga. They have secured a spot in Europa League and basically have nothing left to fight for. But the players who were sent out on the pitch in that game did a good job to score two goals late in the game and record the second win in the last two rounds.

Not much was said about the meeting against Athletic at Villareal. They mostly just talked about the injured and suspended players. That list is very long since coach Toral cannot count on Musacchi, Asenja, Cerisev, Ikechukwu, Pina, and Bailly due to injuries and forwards Vietto and dos Santos and defender Rukavina, who are out with suspensions. That means coach Toral will barely have 11 starters today.
