Netherlands - Turkey (1:1)

The Netherlands without Robben and Van Persie, the last chance for Turkey

  • Published:

The Dutch didn't open the EURO qualifiers well and have to do without their two top forwards today. Turkey are in an even bigger predicament and with a restless atmosphere on the team

The Netherlands got into these EURO qualifiers still under influenced of the third spot they reached in Brazil WC. That saw them lose the opening games with Czech Republic and Iceland but the 6 points from the Kazakhstan and Latvia games put them in control of their own future.

Coach Guus Hiddink has to deal with a lot of criticism but managed to stay in charge. Today's match in Amsterdam marks the start of a chase after the Czechs and the Icelanders, the two teams that managed to get ahead in this group. A win for the Netherlands would put the Turks into a very tough position, meaning this is a very important game for both rivals.

The greatest problem for the Dutch today is obviously the absence of Robber and Van Persie, the two indispensable players. Hiddink decided to invite Bas Dost for the very first time. Dost scored many goals at Wolfsburg this season and Hiddink also has the young PSV's forward Memphis Depay. There are also Affelay and Narsingh and Huntelaar from Schalke, who will clearly be Hidinks's first choice for attacking today.

- Players of Robben and Van Persie's quality are not easy to replace but we tried different variations for this game - the Dutch coach said. His team was working on a 4-3-3 formation in the last practice session Friday. Afellay and Narsingh should start in offense alongside Huntelaar.

- I have coached at least half of these Turkish players when we were knocked to Croatia in the last EURO playoffs They're good players but the situation on the team is often chaotic and emotion runs high. That makes is quite difficult for the coach and I think the situation is like that again on the Turkish team - Hiddink said about the turmoil the Turkish coach is dealing with ahead of this game. What is important for Hiddink is that his team dominate the game in terms of possession and attempts.

- If we want to catch up with the Czech Republic and Iceland, we need to win this game, which means we need to do our absolute best as we meet motivated opponents who have won't get the next chance - Hiddink said. The Dutch won the last three head-to-head meetings without conceding a single goal, having recorded 5 wins and only one defeat in the last 8.

Turkish national team managed to beat Kazakhstan late last year to record their first EURO qualification win, which saw them stay in the race for EURO (at least to some extent).

Turkey have only 4 points after 4 games, lagging  2 points behind the Dutch (in spot three). It is therefore not even necessary to emphasize just how important the game in Amsterdam is for Turkey. A potential defeat would get them miles away from qualifying for EURO.

It transpired that Turkish players Omer Toprak and Hakan Calhanoglu got into a conflict with Tore a while ago. The media talked about guns being drawn, with the whole things finishing when the German duo retired from the national team. Coach Terim was at the Champions League Bayer-Atletico match and allegedly persuaded those two to get back on the team. But, after they got the invites, Toprak refused to join the team saying:

- I don't want to be on the pitch with players who put my life on the line.

The Turkish Football Association threatened the defender with penalties but that didn't change anything and Toprak won't be there to help his team today.

As for the rest of the team, there are quite a few changes compared to the Kazakhstan game but the key players are still there (except those players Terim wrote off after the poor qualifying opening).

Terim is normally known for making spectacular promises but this time, he was quite careful:

- The Netherlands are a powerful team that didn't start this qualifying period as expected and they will want to win today as well. Of course, we are hoping to win and we're preparing for it even though we are not the favorite. Three points would lift the pressure off of our chest but it wouldn't decide anything, just like our potential defeat.
