Ireland - Poland (1:1)

Home wins could be crucial in the long run

  • Published:

Assuming that Germany will be the first in the group despite not such a great start, the one coming to top of the triangle - Poland - Scotland - Ireland will probably be whoever doesn't make mistakes at home. That's why it's much more important to the Irish than it is to the Polish to win today

The Irish got expected wins in the first two rounds, and then added a cherry on top by a sensational tie in Germany. But, being beat by Scotland in November kind of brought them back to square one. To get back on road, they simply have to beat Poland tonight. In an evened out group with four teams aspiring to get placed to Euro, losing every point at home could be lethal. Coach Martin O'Neill agrees:

- We still have a lot to play after Poland, and I don't think this match is the key one, but of course it'd be great to win. Besides, we're the home team and we're obliged to try and attack and go for the win, which is what we're going to do. We don't lack self-confidence, we've waited for this duel a long time, and we can't allow it to just happen to us.

A few of the important players had some health issues these days, but the only one out is the midfielder Gibson. That's probably not that much of a problem, as it would be if it happened to McClean and/or McGeady. Speaking of the tactic, O'Neill admitted he's been thinking about the 3-5-2 formation that Ireland haven't practiced in the serious matches for quite some time now, not only since he lead them. If he does decide to go with that in the end, one of the middle positions will definitely go to Stephen Quinn:

- Poland are a very dangerous team with players who play significant roles in the European leagues, but we have to focus on our game first and foremost, and to what we can do. Sometimes, when you think about the opponent too much, you forget to focus on yourself, and we can't allow ourselves to fall into that trap. I think the key will be in the ball possession, when we get it, we have to keep it as long as possible, because I doubt they'll go with an open formation to give us room for the counter attacks.

From the Polish, the defender Piszczek and the midfielder Grosicki are injured, and the biggest surprise for their fans was failing to invite the long absent midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski who has recovered and is getting more and more minutes in Borussia Dortmund. Some connected that with the fact that Jakub hasn't really been on good terms with the main star Lewandowski, but coach Adam Nawalka claims those rumors are baseless:

- We didn't get together for a long time, but in the last months, we've kept close track of each of the candidates for the national team, and we have a clear image, more or less, of who can offer what at the moment. Kuba was under special scrutiny, and I concluded it's just a bit too early for him to come back, especially when we have a tough away match to play.

Poland did quite all right without Kuba so far, and if the duel against Scotland wasn't played only three days after the magnificent win against Germany, they'd probably be going to Ireland with full possible points. Many will say that the table placing lets them play without  pressure, but Nawalka doesn't agree:

- Our current place is good, but everything can change real quick, and we have to try and get new points in every situation, and that includes Dublin. Ireland are a tough team, their players are all big fighters used to the strong rhythm of the English Premier league, and we'll have to do our best physically if we want to beat them.

The midfielder Žyro got injured in the last round of the Polish league, and left the team on Thursday. The doctors were keeping an eye on him for a few days and decided he can't meet up the expectations of such a demanding game that this one will be.
