England looking to finish with a clean record, last chance for Estonia

  • Published:

England want to finish this qualifying cycle with nothing but wins. They will be without a number of players today, including team captain Rooney. Their opponents have only theoretical chance to reach spot three in the group but they are not giving up just yet

England have played 8 qualifying rounds in group E to record 8 wins and secure a spot in the 2016 Euro a long time ago. Finishing this qualifying cycle without any defeats is therefore the only motivation they have for this game.

First up is the meeting with Estonia, who still have a theoretical chance of finishing in spot 3 and playing an extra qualifying round, meaning the English will be met with an extremely motivated opponent who will not be easy to beat if they hold back. Quite a few injuries will see manager Hodgson change the lineup but even so, with a serious approach England should be able to beat Estonia.

- We are not in experimental mode because we think there have been enough experiments so far. We think we know what we want to do, we think we know the players who are capable of helping and doing what we want on the pitch - the English coach Hodgson said. He will definitely be without team captain Rooney and Liverpool's forward Ings (injuries). Defenders Stones, Baines and Shaw, midfielder Henderson, Wilshere and Delph, and forward Welbeck were all out from before. Center forward Sturridge just recovered from his injury so he's not on Hodgson's list either. That is why Kane is expected to start at striker positions, with Walcott, Barkley and Sterling behind him.

- I know Rooney is one of the players who hates missing the national team games but the blow he received in the Arsenal game demands some rest and we didn't want to take any chances with him. I believe this is a great opportunity for Kane to step up as the No.1 forward on the team. We want another two wins to finish with nothing but wins - Hodgson said.

Estonia still stand a chance of reaching spot three even though those chances are more theoretical than real. A lot of things would have to fall into place for that to happen. Slovenia would first have to lose to Lithuania, while Estonia would have to beat both England and Switzerland.

That happening would be nothing short of miracle. It feels like the Estonians squandered away their chances in the last match when they lost to Slovenia. But, a trip to Wembley is an inspiration to everyone and they are no exception.

- I know everyone will say we don't stand a chance at Wembley but remember Costa Rica in the World Cup. They said the same about them and they ended up beating England. Great names don't guarantee anything in football. We will definitely be better motivated than them since they already qualified - Estonia's forward Ojamaa said. The Swedish coach in charge at Estonia Pehrsson does have some injury struggles but those are not players he often used lately.

- I have a great deal of respect for Hodgson and his work. I know standing up to his team will be tough but this is our last chance. We have nothing to lose and we have to try and stun them - Persson said. Estonia played England three times so far and recorded three defeats with a combined goal-difference of 0-7.
