Cincinnati - Tennessee (33:7)

The Bengals look very impressive

  • Published:

Marvin Lewis's guys will try to get their tenth consecutive win tonight, and with what they showed in the first two weeks, their chances are pretty good, even though the Titans won't be an easy snack

Since they took Andy Dalton in 2011's second round of drafts, things started getting better and better for Cincinnati team. From season to season, the Bengals' appetite grew, and it seems they finally took the step necessary to make some noise in the playoffs, too. After an impressive show in Baltimore, Marvin Lewis's guys easily dealt with the dangerous Falcons on Sunday, with the 24-10 result on the Paul Brown Stadium.

- We got what we needed. I think the offense was very balanced. When we took the lead, we could have focused on the game on the ground, and "eat" the time like that - Dalton described the game after he completed 15 out of 23 assists for 252 yards and one touchdown.

The Bengals' QB is the only one in the league with no cut assists and no sack, and so far, he has thrown 553 yards and got two touchdowns, leading the league in yards per assists (9.07). The Bengals' offense generates the most yards in the whole AFC, but the best receiver A.J.Green's state is a bit worrying. He missed most of the match against the Falcons because of a toe injury he got in Baltimore. The latest info say that Green will probably be playing. He had a successful practice on Friday.

The Bengals will have to do without the tight end Alex Smith till the end of the season. His absence wouldn't be that important if Tyler Eifert didn't have an elbow injury that'll keep him out through the first eight week. Everything is on Jermaine Gresham's back, more or less, and he'll shortly be substituted by the undrafted rookie Ryan Hewitt.

Cincinnati guys showed enviable diversity last week. Giovani Bernard had 90 rushing yards (and a TD), and still managed to get 5 balls for 79 yards. The second running back Jeremy Hill was pretty good, too, with 96 yards and one TD. The wide receiver Mohamed Sanu caught three for 84 yards and had a completed assist for 50 yards.

- I'm content. We're pretty good, but we can't make a step back at the same time. We can't allow ourselves to get relaxed - coach Marvin Lewis pointed out.

His team is even more impressive on the other end of the field. Besides allowing only 26 points in the first two matches, the Bengals also made the opponent lose five balls. All of that doesn't really sound encouraging for the Tennessee Titans who left a great impression in KC, and then ruined it all last Sunday losing 26-10 at home against the Cowboys. After the first half an hour of the game, the Titans were losing 16-0, and their QB Jake Locker was especially weak in that period, completing only 4 out of 12 assists for 26 yards. His passer rating was only 7.6, the least of all the quarterbacks in the league.

Even though their QB ended up with 234 yards by assists, and one touchdown with two cut balls and six sacks, coach Ken Whisenhunt isn't worried:

- I've worked with some of the best quarterbacks in the league, and each of them had games where they just couldn't get anything done. I think that one performance can't be a measure of someone's quality.

The Titans had a regression compared to the first match on the other side of the field, too. One thing that stands out is that they left one of the best running backs of the league, Jamaal Charles, with only 19 yards, and only one week later, DeMarco Murray got 167. True, Murray is a first class running back, too, but inconsistency is paid dearly in this league.

At the same time, the Titans can be happy with having the best defense against the assists in the league (163.0y/m). So far, they cut three assists, but the secondary could be weakened tonight if the cornerback doesn't manage to recover from the groin injury.
