Chicago - Tampa Bay (21:13)

The Bears cannot allow themselves to lose tonight

  • Published:

Quality definitely favors the home team, but their former coach of nine years, Lovie Smith, will try to make things hard for them

The Chicago Bears started the season with high hopes, and with every right to them considering the roster quality, but they soon realized that just stepping to the field will not do it. After losing five of their last six matches, including three in a row with a miserable 51-133 point difference, Marc Trestman's guys beat the Vikings last Sunday 21-13, which kept their playoff hopes alive and gave them the first home win this season.

- I think we stuck together, there was definitely an urgency present. People questioned the character of this team, we know what we have here- said Jared Allen.

Jay Cutler completed 31 of 43 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns against the Vikings, but ended his second match in a row with two intercepts. The Bears QB had half of his 12 intercepts in the last four games.
Matt Forte is the biggest and constant performer on offense, scoring 175 yards of which 117 running. The Bears running back had 733 yards so far this season, and another 575 with catching, totaling 6 touchdowns.

Despite all the quality the Bears have this season, they average just 21.5 points, 6.3 less than last season. Since Marc Trestman took over, the Bears allowed their opponents an average of 29.5 points in 26 games, and at least 40 on 6 occasions. They did a bit better last Sunday, limiting the Vikings to 243 yards, but one must take into account that was one of the least efficient teams in the league.

-I'm sure we can do better on defense, but this was a step in the right direction- said safety Ryan Mundy.

The Bear played much better defense in the nine seasons they were led by Lovie Smith, who took them to the Super Bowl in 2006, but he got sacked in 2012 after the team did not make it to the playoff, despite a solid 10-6 score. After he took a year off, Smith took over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but is not doing so great there. They won just two of their last ten games and one of those was a 27-7 this Sunday in Washington.

- I hope we can build on this and see what happens- said Smith.

Former Bear Josh McCown had a very good game, for passing 288 yards and two touchdowns without getting any interceptions.

- It will be strange, funny, and all that jazz. I'm sure coach Smith will feel the same, but the best we can do is win games, regardless who we win against- said the Bucks quarterback after they ended their five loss streak.

McCown will probably look for rookie Mike Evans, who caught seven passes for 209 yards last Sunday, becoming the first rookie since Anquan Boldin in 2003 to achieve something like that. Evans caught seven passes in each of his last three games, getting 458 yards and five touchdowns in the same period.

The Bucks score just 19.4 points per game, and are nothing much on the defensive end too, allowing as much as 29.0 points per game, but the Bears quarterback thinks they need to be taken seriously:

- It will a challenge, we're familiar with their defense, they've got some really good players on that side- warns Cutler.
