Carolina - Cleveland (17:13)

The Panthers getting their starter QB back

  • Published:

The home team are definitely more motivated tonight, as they should take advantage of Manziel's inexperience and stay in the playoff race

While the majority of the teams will not make it to the playoff with a positive score, the Carolina Panthers might make it with just seven victories thanks to the all-time poor competitors in NFC South, where the currently leading Saints have a 6-8 score. After failing to beat anyone in their previous six matches, Ron Rivera's team put together two victories that kept them in the playoff race.

- We're still alive, but it's all about the next match now. We obviously have to win it if we're to have any chance of doing something this season- said Ron Rivera, whose team are hoping for the Saints to fumble.

In their last 19-17 victory, the Panthers offense was led by Derek Anderson, who will be watching the match today, since Cam Newton is back, allowed back to the field by the physicians only 12 days after a car crash that got him two lower back fractures. Newton had successful practice sessions this week and got a green light to go back on Saturday.

- All indicators are positive right now, the only reason I was silent earlier was that we were waiting for the doctor to confirm it- said the coach of the Panthers, who've been averaging a modest 20.6 points this season.

Newton will probably keep one eye on Greg Olsen, who is tied in the top of tight ends with 81 catches and second in yards won with 960. The Panthers are getting increasingly good performances from Jonathan Stewart, who had 228 rushing yards in his past two matches, and should be relatively successful tonight as well, since he'll face a team who allowed 244 ground yards last Sunday.

Panthers' defense is not very impressive either this season, but they might have a good night as the Cleveland Browns are once again led by Johnny Manziel, who had a nightmare debut. Since they were aware they had jut a marginal chance of getting to the playoff, instead of Brian Hoyer the Browns switched in Manziel, who made only 10 of 18 passes for 80 yards total in the 30-0 defeat against the Bengals, getting intercepted twice as well and limited to 13 rushing yards.

- I'm not listening to what people say. I know I have to play better or they'll keep saying the same- said Johnny Football, who suffered three sacks in his NFL premiere as well.

The Browns performed only 38 offenses last Sunday, the least of all teams this season, and scored a total of 107 yards as opposed to 347 by the Bengals. They went past the center point only once in the entire match, and succeeded in only five first attempts, two of which were after foul plays by the opposing defense.

- I think the sample is too small to make any conclusions. It's very unfair to judge someone's career based on a start like this. This match humbled us all- said Mike Pettine in rookie's defense after his team suffered a third consecutive defeat.

Since they're out of the playoff race, the Browns can relax in tonight's match, and they might also be missing the best cornerback of the league, Joe Haden, who suffered a shoulder injury against the Bengals. Since they're playing for prestige, the Browns will probably spare Haden, which will make it even harder to parry the motivated home team, for whom this is the most important match of the season.
