Barcelona - Ajax (3:1)

Barcelona making amends for the Paris failure

  • Published:

Barcelona will try and make amends for the defeat in Paris against Ajax's youth, who say the approach will be brave but still trail well behind the home team quality-wise

Barcelona have had exactly 10 games in the Spanish championship and the Champions League this season, having conceded only 3 goals in the same period of time. All three, however, were conceded in their last round match with PSG in what might as well been their worst game this season. The win over Ajax is a necessity for the Catalan club and it also wouldn't hurt to get a boost in confidence ahead of the El classico meeting next weekend.

- The Spanish media are already completely focused on the El Classico, but I'm currently not interested in anything but the Ajax game. We need to win Tuesday to make amends for the bad defeat last round. It is a crucial match for us and since we play home, it could turn out to be the key Champions league game for us. They are a very well organized team with a very good offense. Luckily, we are used to having a game every three or four games and preparation for Ajax won't get in the way of our preparation for the derby match with Real - Luis Enrique Martinez.

He can't count on defender Adrian today, who got injured to join Vermaelen and Douglas on the list of players missing this game. There were some doubts about Busquets being on the team today, but most Spanish media list him in the line-up.

Ajax have recorded two 1-1 draws in their first two group stage games, getting much closer to winning in the last round game as they met APOEL in Cyprus, took the lead and had a better overall performance than the home team. Those two points could turn out to be crucial in their bid to get through to the next stage. Objectively though, the Amsterdam-based club are nowhere near Barcelona and PSG quality-wise.

Football teams, of course, often don't act as expected and coach de Boer will definitely not take his team to Barcelona with the intent of losing. His team are, however, lacking consistency in the Dutch championship, already being 4 points down to the leading PSV.

Ajax are the very club that created total football tactics and tika-taka style Barcelona are now famous for. But, Ajax have throughout history always tried both selling players and wining trophies, which used to work in the past (four Champions League titles) but is no longer working today. Only club that acquire players can reach top spots in the European competitions and no matter how hard Ajax fought, their battle is lost before it even started.

- Barcelona are a tough challenge for any club, winning just a point there is tough, but one can always try. We beat Barcelona last year in Amsterdam 2-1, though we do realize that they are one level above now and that their experience will play a very important part today - De Boer said. Only left back Boilesen isn't at his disposal for this game. Forward Schone, who is completely fit and ready, should be the main threat for Barcelona's goal keeper.

- We don't feel inferior to great clubs, or better yet, want to avoid feeling that way by sticking to our style and being confident that we can keep possession, which is precisely what we're doing in the Dutch championship. Our hope is not defense-oriented approach only, we want to play offense and if we manage to do so, a point might become a possible outcome - said de Boer, who thinks Messi is beyond any doubt the greatest threat.

- Messi was not on top of his game last season, but he's back to his old self now. He is always capable of deciding the game being the most complete player in the world, but we'll try and do our best to keep our hopes up - Frank de Boer said. His team lost at Nou Camp last season 4-0 (Sigthorsson missed a penalty kick). Ajax will be in a 4-3-3 tactical formation today.
