Football » Europa League, 5. round
27.11.2014. 19:00 Finished
Feyenoord - Sevilla (2:0)

Feyenoord much better than two months ago

  • Published:

Feyenoord are in fine form when it comes to the Dutch championship and believe Sevilla can be taken down today, even though the Spanish team beat them in Europa League opener easily

Sevilla are top table with 8 points, while Feyenoord lag behind two points and currently hold spot two of the very close Group G. That means that a win in Rotterdam today would secure the next round for Sevilla. A win would be an extremely great chance for Feyenoord ahead of the last round meeting with Standard. A point today might be enough for Sevilla if Rijeka and Standard play a draw in Croatia, but we'll have to wait an see how it turns out. Both Feyenoord and Sevilla will try and get all three points today, that's for sure.

Feyenoord are doing great, having recorded 6 wins in the last 7 Dutch championship games to reach spot three in the table. They won both Europa League home games and lost both away games. The one with Sevilla was their poorest performance so they know that they are in for a very tough challenge as they clash against the defending champions today.

- We're playing home with our fan support and we are definitely going to try and win. Two months ago in Sevilla, we were not ready for such a great opponent, but now we have both the game and the confidence necessary for it - Fred Rutten, Feyenoord's coach, said. He's struggling with defense line again since right back Wilkshire and center back Mathijsen are out, just like winger Manu.

- Our performances are largely about automatism, which lead to stability and result. It's partly a result of training where we worked on game and situations that actually happen in the games. We improved our defense greatly and that makes us very confident about the great game we're in for - Rutten said. With only 7 goals conceded in 13 games, his side is the best defense in the Dutch championship.

- We need to be focused throughout the whole game and build our game patiently against the tough opponent. I believe we'll be able to create attempts - Rutten said and added that his team will play in the 4-2-3-1 tactical formation.

Sevilla have been doing more than well this season, but bad defeats to teams such as Atletico and Barcelona left a few question marks about the capacity of his team. As for the Europa League, which Sevilla normally doesn't do with their best line-up, things are quite good. The defending champions won their home games and a point away, which should be enough for the next stage.

The media have branded today's game in Rotterdam 'a great chance for getting a boost of confidence after the defeat in Barcelona'. Fernando Navarro said:

- I think the 5-1 defeat isn't realistic. We didn't win the last three championship games and that is worrying, but we didn't play badly at all and I'm confident we'll get back on the winning track. We're one step away from securing the Europa League next stage and we are now traveling to Rotterdam to restore the confidence.

Majority of media have published the line-up that proved Sevilla mean business. Unlike in the other European games, Unai Emery will go with what is nearly his best line-up today. Only Carlos Bacca isn't in it out of top players. Fernando Navarro will miss the game with an injury, just like Iborra and Cristoforo, who are out for a while now. French defender Tremoulinas is not on the team either, meaning Emery is in trouble again.
