Panathinaikos to rely on tough defense

Bayern play a fast-pace and good offense game, with only Alba managing to limit them to under 80 points to win 73-68 (Cup game). Panathinakos will rely on the same tactics hoping for the same outcome

Bayern were very close to beating Barcelona away last Friday but then went on to play Gottingen, who were promoted to Bundesliga this year, to record a shock defeat. And once again, motivation proved to be the crucial aspect of the game. Underrating Gottingen cost them points as they lost by 14 goals and conceded close to 100 points.

- Gottingen did perfectly. We didn't stand a chance from the start. They're more fresh, faster, more powerful and better in rebound. I don't know when was the last time that our opponent recorded 43 rebounds. We didn't find the rhythm, we though we were invincible, but they proved us wrong - coach Pesic said.

A defeat this convincing is probably one of the greatest surprises in Bundesliga in the last few years. The Bavarians are quality-wise the best team in the league, but their main focus now is Euroleague. Djedovic did well against Gottingen (19 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists) and Savanovic helped by adding 16 points. Point guard Gavel scored 13 points, adding 6 assists. Idbihi is back on the team, but they still can't count on Taylor.

Bayer are now facing Panathinaikos, one of the teams they played in preseason. The Greek team were better mid-September as they met at one of the tournaments in France. It was 85:75 for Panathinaikos. Steiger scored 22 points (6/6 in three-pointers), Savanovic added 14 plus 7 rebounds, and Bryant and Gavel scored 8 each. Djedovic and Taylor didn't play.

- Panathinakos are a very experienced team with an extraordinary coach. We need to keep an eye on Pappas and Jankovic, they've both been doing great - Pesic said, and Gavel added:

- We need to do much better after losing that Bundesliga game to be able to stand up to Panathinaikos. They're well experienced, but we know what to expect.

Panathinaikos started this season with a lot of uncertainty, but Ivanovic's been doing a great job getting the team organized. The lucky win over Olympiacos in the Cup was just what they needed to keep the good performances going. They won all four games so far, the last one as they took on Kolossos on Monday. The previous seasons' meetings in Kolossos were often tricky, but Panathinakos settled the game with an excellent second quarter performance (31-13).

- We were two different teams today, We played good defense at times and didn't do defense wise at other moments. Kolossos are a good team, they were able to use our weak moments to close the gap - Ivanovic said. Jankovic and Batista were the best players on his team, havin scored 12 points each.

Panathinakos has similar weak moments in their game with the Polish Turow a week ago. The away game with Bayern is a much tougher challenge though, with the Bavarians more capable of turning those weak moments into a win.

- We're opening the Euroleague this year against a tough opponent. It's an important game and Bayern are a good quality team with well-experienced players. They will be extra motivated home and that much tougher. We'll be ready and do our best - Pappas said.

With only Nelson still out and everyone else back on the team, the coach has a better situation with the roster. Panathinaikos will try and rely on their defense, well aware of how efficient the Bavarians are capable of being home. With Bayern preferring the fast-pace game, Panathiaios are expected to slow the game down.

- We'll play a good-quality team and we know it won't be simple. They have talent, good player and a good coach. Their home games are particularly tough for any opponent. We'll have to be tough and ready for a tough game - Ivanovic said.

A bet we played so many times last year with Panathinaikos. Elite defense and slow basketball were and stayed their trademark, which makes this worth playing even when they're playing away against one of the best offensive teams in Europe, as i'm having a hard time remembering the last time anyone scored 80+ against PAO in a competitive match. PAO will not allow the run'n'gun game that would suit the home team. I expect a very tough match in which Panathinaikos look closer to winning in a close finish, which makes a team under on the home team the best option.
