Washington - Detroit (99:95)

A duel of two teams who lost to two worst teams of the league last night

  • Published:

The Wizards lost 11 out of the last 13 matches, but tonight they're hosting a team who could be physically and mentally drained after losing to the awful Knicks after two overtimes last night

Even though they stacked up enough wins in the first part of the season and the playoff shouldn't be questionable, the crisis that the Washington Wizards got into even before the All-Star break is becoming worrisome. The Wizards had a great chance to end their crisis in Philadelphia last night, but instead of the expected celebration, the coach Wittman's team got another disappointing defeat, their 11th in the last 13 matches played.

- We're in a tough streak, but I wouldn't say we touched the bottom. We still have over 50% wins, but we have to get back to the real way of playing asap. Until we do, we'll be getting defeats. We won't defeat anyone while playing like this - Wall said.

How bad they were is obvious from the fact that they were a few points behind throughout the whole game, and they ended up empty-handed. The Wizards had the miserable 32.3%, continuing the previous miserable offensive result when they scored only 77 points against the Wolves.

- We all have to take a long, hard look at ourselves and ask ourselves what it is that we can do better. Not in the sense of of the statistics, but in the sense of what makes the team better. True, we're not scoring enough, but I don't think that's why we're being defeated. We were missing our shots in the season before, and were still winning. It's simple, nobody is playing good enough for us to be winning right now - Wall added.

Wall was the best player of the Wizards with 21 (7/26) points, 11 assists and five rebounds. Only Porter and Sessions had double-digited effects, Porter 19 (8/19) points, and Sessions 14 (4/10).

After a surprising defeat in Philly, the Wizards will have another tough task ahead tonight. They'll be hosting the Pistons who defeated them convincingly a week ago in Detroit. Even though there were signs he was going to play last night, Beal wasn't ready, so he's questionable for tonight as well, as well as Pierce and Humphries. Either way, the Wizards' game is obviously lacking in many regards lately, so coach Wittman has a tough task of raising his team's mood after last night's difficult defeat.

- We're not scoring, but our problem is that we're not self-confident enough. We're trying to do many things quickly, like we're trying to get out of this crisis quickly. But, that's now how it works, and as long as we don't stop doing that and focus on playing the right way instead, we'll keep lining up defeats - Wittman concluded.

The Detroit Pistons got to the capital after surprisingly losing to the awful Knicks, 121-115, after two overtimes last night. It seemed that Stan Van Gundy's guys were controlling things after taking the break with 12 points ahead (53-41), but for some reason, they gave up on playing defense in the second part, and that ended up costing them dearly.

- We played the entire second half-time and the overtime horribly. Our starters didn't react well at the half-time for the second match in a row. We weren't doing anything in the defense, so it wasn't hard for the Knicks to get back in the game - the coach Van Gundy pointed out.

His team had numerous chances of solving the game. They had +18 in the second half-time, and were leading by four 28 seconds before the end of the regular part, but even that wasn't enough.

- We had plenty of matches like these. If you don't play the defense and don't control the rebounds, these things will keep happening - coach Van Gundy was disappointed. His team scored the humble 40.2 from the floor, including 8/31 three-pointers.

Greg Monroe was the most efficient player with 28 points (9/13) and 13 rebounds, while Andre Drummond got 21 points (9/11) and 15 rebounds. After having an average of 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists in the previous two matches, Reggie Jackson had 16 points last night, but with the miserable 5/24 from the floor.

- He does what he does. He was great in the previous two matches. Not so much tonight - the Pistons' coach said. He used four of his starters for +40 minutes (Monroe, Jackson, Dummond, Kaldwell-Pope).

Luckily for the Pistons, they'll be playing an away match against a team with a disastrous game lately, but even that isn't any kind of a guarantee. They still have to work on their defense. If they don't, they'll hardly get to their first playoff since 2009.
