Memphis - Sacramento (97:83)

The Kings without a win in Memphis since 2009

  • Published:

Even though they lost the last nine road games, the team from California stand a chance today since the home team are in a crisis and all of their three head-to-head games this season were quite close

After seeming quite impressive for the most part of the season, the Memphis Grizzlies hit a bump on the road. They are 9-10 since February 25th, which saw them drop to spot three in the West behind the Rockets, with whom they are fighting for the Division title. Following defeats to the Cavs and Warriors by 45 points combined, David Joerger's boys faced the defending champions who outplayed them 103-89 last night.

- It won't be easy to get where we want to go. We are trying to win the division title. The West is full of great teams, the East has a lot of quality. We played the best teams in the last three games. We simply need to stick together and stay positive - Green said after recording 19 points (8-for-15) in the Spurs game.

The Grizzlies were lagging behind San Antonio from the very start and didn't seem capable of making a comeback even when they got very close in the third quarter.

- I think this is one of the best games we played but I'm happy we won't play then anymore, at least not in regular season. The offensive end was good but we missed a lot of good shots again - Joerger said after his team finished short of 90 points for the third straight game.

After finishing with 15 points and 6 rebounds combined the previous 2 games, Zach Randolph finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds last night. Marc Gasol did well too to finish with 16 points (7-for-15), while the starting back court duo Courtney Lee and Mike Conley added 16 points with 6-for-22 from the floor.

The Grizzlies' offensive troubles affect their performance on the other end of the floor. Having previously limited their opponents to only 95.2 points, the Grizzlies are conceding 107.0 during the winning run. They allowed the opponent to successfully finish with more than a half of their attempts from the floor, which happened only 4 times in the first 71 game.

Lucky for Memphis, they are set to take on the Kings tonight, who were surprisingly on a 4-game winning run before losing in New Orleans 102-88 Friday. DeMarcus Cousins' great performance (39 points and 20 rebounds) got overshadowed by the defeat. The rest of the team didn't do much to help Cousins.

- It seemed like we were always a step too slow. The offense wasn't working but the Pelicans and their great defense get credit for that too - coach Karl said after his team allowed the Pelicans 51.2 percent shooting and lost the rebound battle 47-37.

In spite of the defeat, the Kings have a chance to finish on the best record since season 2007/08 which they ended with 38 wins. They never finished with more than 29 games since, which should change provided that they win at least 3 out of the remaining 10 games.

The Kings are without a win in Memphis since 2009, having recorded 9 straight defeats at FedEx Center since. They gave the Grizzlies a hard time in all three head-to-head matches, though. They lost away in the very last moments of the game, after squandering away a 26-point lead. They got back to Memphis for the home 97-85 defeat by winning 102-80 late February.

- They know how to win games. We were in a tough situation in that game but the players refused to lose - coach Karl said.
