Onesta: We're still not at our top level

France and Argentina regularly meet ahead or in great competitions. They met in a test match ahead of this Championship too and France won convincingly

The two opening game proved Argentina came to Qatar prepared and that they came significantly closer to European teams in terms of quality. They played a draw with Denmark, stood up to Poland and Germany well, but none of that would have mattered if they didn't record a win over Russia in the last round. It was the key game for Argentina and things only got more difficult when Simonet was sent off mid-first half. The Argentinians displayed character and team spirit to record one of the great wins of the generation.  That gave them a chance to improve their best ever World Championships position, which was spot 12 in Sweden. 

- This team did great things and is continuing to record top results. I think it's a sign of a good cooperation between the management, the players and the coaches. We are proving that hard work can get us good result over a longer period of time - coach Gallardo said.

Diego (6) and Pizarro (7 goals) stepped up after Simonet left. But the win over Russia was a team win, with every player doing his best to get Argentina in the next stage despite being in a group with 4 European teams. Round of 16 draw paired them up another top team whom they know very well. France and Argentina meet either at great competitions or ahead of them as a rule. They played in the preparation period ahead of this championship and France won convincingly. Argentina managed to keep up by half time (10-14) but that was pretty much it.

France are a heavy favorite today, no doubt about it. Argentina will rely on the fact they have no pressure about winning and have nothing to lose. They already did what they came to do.

- If we defend well and have fastbreaks, I think we can be a threat - Diego Simonet said.

- We're making history and what could be better than beating the best team in the world - Gallardo said and added:

- We were nowhere close to Denmark and Poland before, but we are now and that is the key.

Despite not lagging behind the European teams as much anymore when it comes to quality, Argentina could not stand up to France in Nantes ahead of WC. France won 33-19 despite not being at their best level, just like today.

- We are still not top-level but we are getting there. I expect us to start taking advantage of the situation earlier on in the game to start winning more convincingly - Onesta said and added:

- We are making progress, you could see it against Sweden already, even though we still weren't at our best. We are interested in wins only now!

France was winning even in group stage while still making progress and improving their game, even managing to beat Sweden, who did much better in the very beginning. It was a very strange match in which France, or their player Mahe, managed to surprise Sweden, which is not the case with Omeyer's saves in key moments - France's opponents are well used to that.

- We proved we can play top teams even when we're not at our best level. That's very important for the more demanding games to come - those that will put a lot of pressure on us.

Onesta was particularity impressed with his team's performance in the last 10 minutes of the game. In his opinion, there is no other team that can finish the game better than France at this point. Maybe they'll need to proved that once again today. It is, however, expected for France to settle the game earlier on to advance to the next round against the most pleasant surprise of this WC.
