Skive - Lemvig (30:23)

Skive's toughness or Lemvig's speed?

  • Published:

The Danes have to play two matches against every opponent for the playoffs, and the first-league team's advantage is that they're playing the return fixture at home. That's Lemvig in this case. Skive have nine wins and two ties in 2015 in the 2nd league

Everyone knows that the small Danish team Skive are known as one of the toughest teams at any first-league court in Europe. They've always been a synonym for a firm defense and matches that ended with few goals scored on both sides. That didn't change when they got into the 2nd league, where they stayed under 50 goals in 13 out of 26 matches played, and lots of others around 51-52. No surprise there because coach Simon Sørensen still leads the team, and their game style is still to switch fast between defense and offense, with the focus on the defense. Also, the players are pretty experienced, there's not many youngsters or kids, which is the case in Lemvig who were one of the youngest teams of the 1st league.

The Danes changed the competition system this season, so there's no more playing to stay in the league in two groups of four teams. Now, two matches are played and the number of goals is the key in deciding. Skive were the third team of the second league, so they're playing against the 12th team of the first league, while the second team of the second league, Randers, are playing against the 13th team of the first league, Skanderborg.

Skive had a terrible start of the season, three defeats in five rounds, but then only lost two in the following 21 matches. What sounds even more impressive is that they got nine wins and two ties out of 11 matches played in 2015. Despite that, they hung out there till the end, and the key moment was in the round before the last, when their direct rival Tønder played a tie against Ajax. Skive used that blunder and ended the season one point ahead of the fourth-placed Ajax. If they had an even number of points, Tønder would be third because of the better score against them.

They lost important pivots Ciszhoz and Wørse (both left to Mors) this season, but managed to play the second part of the season great. The most deserving ones for this success are the backs Nicolei Jensen (114 goals), who stayed from the last season, and Mads Øris Nielsen (160), the first name of the team, who came from Bjerringbro last summer. He was made redundant there, but his brother Nikolaj is playing there now. Other important names are the right back Marius Hovde Andersen (93 goals), and the middle back Per Ryberg (77).

There are a few other important players, and we can say for sure that they deserved these playoffs. Out of 13 home matches, they've got 10-1-2, and only 23.2 goals conceded per match. The statistic of home matches shows nobody conceded less than Skive in the entire league.

They left the second team of the league, Randers, at 15 and 20, the league winner Nordsjaelland at 23 and 35. Those 35 were in the home defeat, 35-25 on December 20th. That was their last defeat, and after that, their series of wins and ties started.

Lemvig's form is questionable before the playoffs, with 12 defeats in the last 13 league matches. Although the messages they're sending out are about them getting ready for this for a long, long time, and being focused on this instead of the last matches that didn't really matter in the league.

- We had good practices in the past week, Kasper Young and Jonas Gade recovered, and I think we're good before these first two matches - the right back Jesper Poulsen claims.

Unlike Skive, they don't like playing rough, but prefer fastbacks and running around.

- Skive suit us, and I think our chances are great in these two matches - Poulsen claims.

- They've got a few physically strong players, so we can't come too close to their defense when we're playing offense, to get into the duels. We have to play in a high rhythm, but also be very patient. We know they like to transition from the defense to the offense, and that's where we have to pressure them with the first and the second wave.

In the elite of 13 away matches, they won only one (against the bottom league table club Odder), but that doesn't have to mean much because the circumstances are different now, and their opponent is not a first-league club.
