Monaco to take some calculated risks

  • Published:

Juventus rarely lose, especially by more than two goals, while the home team has trouble scoring at their home stadium

Monaco suffered a minimum loss in Torino in the first game, but they had a lot of complaints about the referee. There was a questionable penalty after which Juventus took the lead, and the away team's main complaint was that the foul happened outside the box. Either way, Monaco will have to go for a win at home, and that proved to be a problem several times this season. In the League, however, Monaco has much better results in away games than at home stadium where they simply can't find a solution for the opponents' defensive game. In the previous round, against Rennes, they managed to take the lead, but then gave their opponent the initiative and had to settle for a point at the end. This kind of approach will not be enough today for the Italian champion.

Coach Leonardo Jardim is also well-aware of that:

- We have to play a perfect game in which we will be strong and well organized defensively and also clinically precise offensively. This season, we have been scoring more goals in away games, and this the best moment for us to start scoring at our Louis II stadium. We can't play it safe this time, we have to take some, I would say calculated, risks. This doesn't mean we will only focus on offense, we will try to remain calm and play it smart, and that way achieve the result we want.

Portuguese coach can't count on Lacine Traore again today due to injury, but that isn't news anymore. However, midfielders Jeremy Toulalan, Geoffrey Kondogbia  and Nabil Dirar are still under question mark for this game. The latter two are in the starting lineup, based on the majority of previews, so it can be assumed that their ankle problems are minor.

Even if there were any doubts if Juventus would win the Serie A title, there are none anymore after their win against runner-up Lazio on Saturday. Allegri's team decided the winner early in the game by Tevez and Bonucci's goals and with that they have a 15-point advantage on the league table with only 8 rounds of Serie A to go. After a gaffe against last-placed Parma, Allegri didn't want to take any chances by resting his key players against Lazio because he needed to keep the positive atmosphere in the team ahead of the away game in Monaco. The home team definitely have a difficult task ahead of them because Juventus won 8 out of the last 9 games, with a defeat against Parma when young Mauri scored to the reserve goalkeeper Storarija. Another confirmation that Monaco will have a hard task ahead of them is the fact that Juventus suffered only two defeats in which the goal-difference was 2 in the last two seasons, actually since they were eliminated by Bayern in Champions League season 2012-13.

After their minimal win against Monaco last week, Allegri said that the key to reaching the semi-final is scoring in away games:

- The result of the first game is good because now we have a small advantage, but the return fixture will not be easy. We have a better understanding of our opponents now. They are well organized in defense, and they have technically and physically strong forwards who can create problems for their opponent even though they don't have a lot of support from their teammates. We lacked patience and we acted rashly too many times. Monaco has the best defense of the Champions League as well as their national League, so it will not be easy to score. I am optimistic, we have to score there.

Allegri's biggest problem for the return match is Vidal's injury, he scored the only goal against Monaco in Torino. His appearance is under question mark, which is a big handicap because Pogba is out of play for a while now, and Pirlo only just recovered from an injury. It is assumed that Allegri will set a 3-5-2 formation and that Vidal will be replaced by Pereyra if he doesn't recover completely.
