Cleveland - Boston (99:91)

In the first match the Celts couldn't handle the Cavs' top players

  • Published:

In case they want to "steal" the win tonight, the Celts will have to be a lot better in rebound, which is a segment of the game in which the Cavs dominated in the first match

Cleveland's final home match in the playoffs was five years ago when, after the defeat from Boston in the fifth match of the second round of the playoffs, LeBron James left the court with his head bowed down low. Two months after that he decided to pack his things and head to Miami. After four relatively successful years in Florida, LeBron returned to his town, and destiny wanted the first home match in the playoffs to be against, just like five years ago, the fatal Boston.

Unlike then, James is welcoming this match with a lot better co-players. That was best seen in the first meeting in which Cavs won thanks to the great Irving. Although he's a debut player in the playoffs, that wasn't felt on Irving and his game. With 30 (11-for-21) points he was the most efficient individual of the match, and the second debut player, Kevin Love, reached a double-double effect with 19 (5-for-14) points and 12 rebounds.

- Both were phenomenal. You can say they had an excellent debut in the playoffs - James praised the players. He ended the match with 20 (8-for-18) points, seven rebounds and six assists.

It was a match in which Boston looked really good in the first quarter which they've won with 31-27. Cavs, led by the great Irving, turned that over by half-time and led with 62-54. Later Cavs led with +20 points, and each time the Celts would come near to a draw, James and company had something in store for them.

Although they ended the meeting with a solid 46.8% of shots from the floor against 45.1% of Cavs', the Celts were still defeated convincingly. The main reason for that lies in the fact that coach Stevens's team were completely out-rebounded. The Cavs had an advantage in the rebound 46-34, and in second chance points 18-11.

- We will have to be a lot better in that segment. We will learn from our mistakes - coach Stevens said.

Except the very good quarter which should be an indicator of the rest of the match, the Celts didn't do too well. Only Thomas was good and ended the meeting with 22 (6-for-14) points, 10 assists and five rebounds, while Turner (4-for-12) and Olynyk (5-for-7) were behind him with 12 points each.

- We are still full of confidence. The coach said we did some thing awesome, and others bad - said Turner.

In order to succeed tonight, except for the better rebound, the Celts will also have to keep their defense tight considering that Irving, Love and James had a lot of room to go around. It will be interesting to see what kind of changes coach Stevens has in mind. He himself is aware that defending the Cavs is mission impossible.

- They simply have so much weapons that you only get to choose how to "die". We have to keep an eye on LeBron, but Love and Irving as well. When you're playing against them you simply don't have room for errors - concluded Stevens.
