Pierce: The pressure is on them now

  • Published:

Poor shooting by the guards on both teams marked Game 1. Lowry and DeRozan finished with 8-for-30 combined, while Wall and Beal had 11-for-41

After blocking Lowry's shot that would have seen Toronto win last season in Game 7 of playoff first round, Paul Pierce, who was then a Brooklyn Net, became one of the most hated people in Canada. His interview in which he said that Toronto don't have something special and necessary for making it past playoffs round 1 didn't help him either. And then, he was one of the key players in Washington's win over the Raptors Saturday night in Toronto.

- This win took pressure pressure off us and put it on them now - Pierce said.

It was not one of those games that is easy on the eyes. The Wizards took control in the second quarter and took a 46-42 lead by half time. They went on to bring the difference up to 15 points, with the Raptors managing to close the gap in the very end and force an overtime. But, Pierce opened the overtime with a three pointer, while the Raptros failed to score from the floor for 4 minutes.

- We simply missed too many easy shots - DeRozan said.

He's right as the Raps finished with miserable 38% shooting from the floor. Lowry did especially badly to be ejected with two and a half minutes left in regulation time with 6 personal fouls. He finished with only 7 points in 10 shots. DeRozan didn't do brilliantly either, having scored 15 points but in 20 shots (6-for-20), but at least he added 11 rebounds and 6 assists.

- What was more frustrating than the defeat itself was the fact I was not myself tonight. I wasn't helping my team and then I had to leave the floor with personal fouls. It's only the first game, though and I have to learn from it and carry on - Lowry said.

Since they recorded a defeat in Game 1, the Raptros will be under extra pressure tonight because a new defeat would mean a very tough situation. A two-win lead might be crucial in a series like this one. The Raptors will need their shooters to be much better tonight and will need to be closer to Washington when it comes to rebounding, especially because the opponents had shorter starters on the floor for the most part (Pierce at 4).

- As long as we fail to realize rebounding is priority, we will have massive problems - coach Casey said. His team lost the rebounding battle 61-48 in the first game.

While the visitors need to be worried about their performance and the result from game 1, the Wizards have more than enough reason to be happy. They recorded a win in the end despite also having a tough night when it came to shooting efficiency (39.4%).

Pierce was brilliant with 20 points (7-for-10), while Beal added 16 points (6-for-23), 9 rebounds, and 6 assists.

- It's important to have such a player in these moments. If I fail to use his experience and brain, I'm a bad coach - coach Wittman said after causing a lot of trouble for the home team by putting Pierce at position 4.

Since they recorded a win in Game 1, the Wizards are a bit more relaxed today. They now, however, that the chance for taking a massive lead in the series is great.

- We need to have that selfish approach today in order to win game 2 as well. Winning two games away can easily break down the opponents - Pierce said, while coach Wittman added:

- We have a much tougher task in the second game. We cannot get complacent because we won't stand a chance in that case. We need to play much better than in the first game in order to win.

There's definitely still room for improvements at Washington, especially when it comes to Wall-Beal duo, which combined 26 points in the first game but needed 41 shot for it (11-for-41). Wittman can be happy about his defensive end in the first game. That worked pretty well even though he might be concerned about the fact Toronto's bench, lead by the best 6th man in the league, outplayed Washington's bench 48-27.
