Greece - Lithuania (68:58)

The Greeks not allowed the opponents 60 points in four back-to-back matches

  • Published:

The defense will be the basis of success today, and the home team will be extra motivated because of the defeat against Lithuania in the first round. They dominated that match for the most part, but Lithuania turned the result around in the last two minutes

Greece were in a tough spot after the first phase of the competition, and didn't get any wins for the second round. The quarterfinal seemed miles away. However, looking at the last four matches, the home team left the best impression of all the semifinalists, and they look like the first favorite for the gold. The Greeks crushed Italy and Turkey, turned the result around in an irrelevant match against Russia, and faced the uncomfortable France in the quarterfinal.

That was the key match of the tournament because a defeat meant the dream about the medal will be crushed, for both teams. The Greeks played another great game defensively, and limited their opponent under 60 points for the fourth duel in a row. As expected, the fight was really evened out, but it was solved in the third period. The Greeks got a double-digited difference and controlled the final moments expertly.

- This is a really important win against a terrific opponent. We managed to stop their counterattacks, which was the key. We played a great defense at the beginning of the third period, scored some shots and got an advantage that gave us security - the coach Papatheodoru said.

Even a glance at the statistics reveals who the leaders were in the Greek team. Charalampopoulos was very close to a triple-double achievement a few days ago, he was two rebounds short, but he made it all up in the most important match of the tournament. He had 13 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists against the French, he took part in most of the Greek actions, either through scoring or finding his co-players at the right time. However, the great center Papagiannis deserves to be mentioned, too (21 points and 13 rebounds). He completely beat the French front court under the hoop.

The semifinal brings them Lithuania, who beat them in the first round. That will definitely be an extra incentive for the Greeks.

- Lithuania are a really good opponent, they beat us in the first round. We're in a good form and are feeling great physically, but the key is in being focused and having the energy - Papatheodorou added.

The quarterfinal between Lithuania and Germany was an evened out fight. The Lithuanians were more successful in the final moments, but that could easily have been the description of the Germans, as well. The nuances decided, and rebounds were perhaps the key segment. Lithuania not only managed to balance it out, but even dominated (47-39), primarily thanks to the great Birutis (15 points and 14 rebounds). Sedekerskis also stood out with 15 points, and Varnas with 13.

The Lithuanians reached their primary goal, to get to the semifinal, so the medal is really close. They can get it today if they manage to beat the Greeks again, but that won't be easy at all. The Greeks are on the rise, and they were very close to winning even that first duel. They dominated the first three periods, had 64-60 two and a half minutes before the end, but didn't score any points in the final moments. Lithuania managed to turn the result around in that time.

An intense match and solving the winner in the final moments is definitely not something Lithuania will want to do today. The Greeks were much better in those situations so far. However, it's not simple to be evened out with the Greeks in the mood they are in. The results so far showed that when they get a double-digit difference, it's hard to beat them. Neither the Turks nor the French managed to do that, and both those teams are stronger than Lithuania. The Greeks know how to control the game, and the Lithuanians will have to stand up to that initial rush of the home team. Otherwise, they're likely to get defeated.

I was not too impressed by this Lithuania even though they reached the semifinals. Except for that first game with Greece, in which Lithuania were lagging behind almost all the time and managed to win only because of Greece's bad finish, the Lithuanians didn't beat any other top team here. Bosnia played their worst game at the start, and they weren't too convincing against Russia, Croatia and Germany. I think the battle for the bronze medal is their reality. They are now to take on Greece, who left the best impression so far. They lost games to Bosnia and Lithuania in the very final moments and displayed character when they couldn't afford to lose. They crushed Croatia, Italy and Turkey and could have won by 30 points if they didn't hold back in the end. Greece also beat France yesterday easier than expected. They carried out the tactical plan perfectly and stopped the French transition completely. Regardless of that defeat, I'm sure Lithuania suits them more than France and that they will have their vengeance today. This margin suggests a close game but I don't think that's what we'll see today. We'll see hosts' winning by at least 10 points.
