Arsenal beat Newcastle seven times in a row

Newcastle played a draw at Old Trafford the last round to get their first away point since February. Ttheir confidence will be an important factor against Arsenal who kept on beating them over the the past few years

After three rounds played, Newcastle still didn't get a win, but their match at the Old Trafford in the last round looked encouraging. It was a draw against Manchester United, 0-0. They beat a lower league team in the League Cup this week, Northampton 4-1, but the coach Steve McClaren spared nine starters for that one. They were used against Manchester. It was a necessary step to take because they're facing Arsenal today, another tough task.

Arsenal are an unpleasant opponent for Newcastle, beating them for the last seven matches while scoring 20 goals in the process. In the last 28 league duels, Newcastle won only three times, and that was when Arsenal got their player sent off. McClaren would like his team to be fearless in today's match, and to try and show their offensive potential.

- Our center backs Coloccini and Taylor were great at the Old Trafford, and that makes me happy, but I also expect us to be more and more dangerous to the front - McClaren said. His injured list is getting shorter, so only the forward Riviere, the midfielder Marveaux and the defender Dummett are on it. But there's a good replacement for any of them.

- I think that the trust into our abilities is growing, and that faith is really important in the matches against the big rivals, like Arsenal, who can outplay anyone in the league thanks to their quality. I'd wish for us to show progress in this match as well, and then we can hope for a positive result - McClaren pointed out. That mental block because of the history of matches against Arsenal will be important to break before this match, if Newcastle players want to be successful today.

Arsene Wenger didn't talk about the importance of a good start of the season for nothing. But, Arsenal had a bad one, so they're behind the leading spots of the league table.

Losing to West Ham, a draw against Liverpool, and a tough win against Crystal Palace didn't offer anything remotely close to what Arsenal were showing in the final matches of the last season. Wenger has a reason to be worried, especially if he remembers how easily Manchester United beat all those three.

So, the duel in Newcastle is of utmost importance for Arsenal. They just have to get this win, and it's interesting that Arsenal's shot accuracy is only 5%, the smallest percentage in the league three rounds in.

- I think that not all our cylinders are working right now, that is, we lack shot efficiency because we had so many clear chances already - Wenger complained. He still can't count on the forward Welbeck and the midfielder Wilshere, and probably the center back Mertesacker as well. His partner in the back line, Koscielny, also had some health issues, but is expected to play.

- What's most important is that we prepared well to give it all out for the win before the two-week break. It will be hard in Newcastle because their fans are always eager in their support for their team, and the draw against Manchester United really raised them up. But, we would always find a way to triumph in the last seasons, and we kind of like this kind of pressure - Wenger concluded.
