Sunderland - Manchester United (2:1)

Sunderland beat United only once in the last 27 attempts

  • Published:

Sunderland are in the danger zone and cannot afford to hold back in any match, while the fifth Manchester United still believe they can earn their place in the Champions League, and they're also only interested in winning

This season Sunderland are again in a tough battle, trying to save their Premiership status, and after they earned only two points in the last four rounds, the safe zone is four points away.

Manager Sam Alardyce's team are in a series of very tough matches against the best clubs of the league, and in the last round they recorded a draw against Liverpool in an away match, after they were losing at first with 0-2. That's proof that anything is possible, and Sunderland's players will need that today. They're welcoming the fifth Manchester United who are not satisfied with that position and who want more.

- I am still convinced we can get out of the danger zone and we will surely fight until the end - said Sunderland's manager Sam Allardyce who send away forward Adam Johnson from the team after having been found guilty for sexually assaulting a minor.

Defenders Duncan Watmore and Younes Kaboul are out due to injuries, as well as midfielder Sebastian Larsson and forward Jeremain Lens.

- In the last nine matches we didn't manage to preserve our goal and that's the main reason of our failures, and we will try to repeat the game with Manchester City whom we've outplayed against Manchester United. We were only missing a goal to wrap that one up - Allardyce recollects the last match they hosted when the visiting team were saved by the goal frame and the excellent goalkeeper Hart.

- The team are very good in the sense of unity and togetherness. Everyone accepted well the new players who are good additions and who raised the quality of other players - concluded Allardyce who brought goalkeeper Steve Harper, defenders Jan Kirchhoff and Lamine Kone, and forward Wahbi Khazri this winter. Khazri was the one who assisted the experienced Defoe for the draw goal in the match against Liverpool.

Sunderland won't be thrilled by the fact that in the last 27 league head-to-head games against Manchester they won only once and lost 20 times, and the last triumph was back in 1997.

Manchester United are slowly getting their shape back up, but they're short on luck, especially in away matches. In the last two against Newcastle and Chelsea they went into injury time with one goal more, and both times they conceded the goal and let the win slip away.

With four points lost they could have been only two points away from the fourth place, but this way they're at six points away and there is little room for failure until the end of the season. Louis van Gaal hopes his team learned something from all the disappointments, and at the same time he expects the efficiency to be raised because there has been a tendency for that in the last couple of rounds. Neither the away team nor the hosts won't be calculating in this match in Sunderland because a single point means nothing to them.

- If we recall that we had four defeats in December, then the current results show our strong character and the possibility to handle pressure. But, we still have to progress in order to win in the series and catch up with the clubs in front of us - explained Manchester United's manager Louis van Gaal who is not bothered by media rumors that Jose Mourinho will take over Old Trafford in the summer.

- I don't need public support and I don't care what the media say. I have a three-year contract and any question regarding that if for the head of the club, not me - Van Gaal was brief with the press. For this away match he still has six players out, and Januzaj and Varela are also questionable, but they practically didn't even play this season.

- Had we played the whole season like we did since New Year's, we would have been champions, but we will go until the end in each match, and the same goes for today in Sunderland; we'll try to show we're worth more - concluded Van Gaal. In the last six away matches this season in the league, Manchester United won only once, against Liverpool, with 1-0.
