Lowen - Kiel (24:20)

The win would see Lowen put one hand on the trophy, Kiel lost Wiencek too

  • Published:

Lowen have a chance to confirm the brilliant opening to the season today to to take a big 6-point lead ahead of Kiel (already 5 points ahead of Flensburg). They will try and bring Kiel down through tough defense, which turned out to be deadly for he visitors in their meetings with tough teams this season (Zagreb and Goppingen)

Lowen have had an impressive start to the season. They are undefeated, with Kielce forcing them to drop the only point last week. Lowen had that game basically settled as well but squandered away the 2-goal lead in the final minutes of the game and then missed the shot that would have seen them win. It seemed like Lowen were not doing their best in that game as for example, they didn't play the 3-3 defense at all and instead of playing aggressively tried to outrun the opponents. They were clearly holding back to save energy for the Kiel match, which could turn out of to be the key match of their season. Why would the the seventh round match be the crucial one? Kiel are already 4 point short of Lowen and if the home team win today Kiel will get 6 points down. Flensburg are also already 5 points short, meaning the win today would see Flensburg take a kind of a lead that would be difficult to lose.

Lowen have had another Bundesliga test on Saturday to beat bottom table Lubbecke. They a 19-12 lead at half-time but Lubbecke managed to limit them to only 2 goals in the opening 11 minutes of first half. Lowen, however, kicked their game up a notch for a stress-free final part of the game.

- We did brilliantly in the first half - Jacobsen said.

Good news is, substitute goal keeper Stanic and first right back Petersen were back on the team following injury-struggles. While there was no need for Stanic to play, Peterson spent only a short while on the floor because Reinkind also did a good job. Both of those players are very important for this clash against Kiel. Granted, Appelgren has had a great start to the season but Lowen need a substitute goal keeper to be fit for such a derby match. Stanic's brilliance already saw them win in Magdeburg, while Peterson's importance on the right back position cannot even be described.

- The 6-0 defense was good, we were not focused enough when playing the 3-3 in the first half but things got better in the second half - Jacobsen said.

Lubbecke scored only 8 goals in the second half, meaning the 3-3 defense should be a great help for Jacobsen's team today. It created huge problem for Kiel last spring, even though Kiel had a much better team back then (Jicha, Palmarsson). Lowen managed to limit Kile, who hosted that game, to only 23 goals. Players like Canellas and Vujin could struggle with that defense again, just like Dissinger and Mamelund, if the latter even gets any time in the game.

- Kiel dropped 4 points so far, which puts them under more pressure. It would be too soon to talk about the title even if we win today - middle back Andy Schmid said.

Coach Jabobsen tried to put the pressure that being the favorite brings on Kiel:

- Kiel are the favorite in every game because no team has a better list of players. But, we proved that we can win in the past, which is what we'll try and do today, with the help of our fans.

Kiel are to face Lowen following a win in the North German classic against Flensburg. The brillaint defense and Katsigiannis saw them settle that game in ist very final stage to get two points. Flensburg had a tie 49 minutes into the game but then failed to score for the next 7 mintues, which allowed Kiel to win. Canellas finished with team-high 7 points (4 from penalties), even though he didn't do brillantly. But, at least he managed to put an end to horrific performances he's been having until the last game.

- It was a great game. We were great in defense, good in offense. Flensburg's goal keeper Moller caused us problems - Gislason said.

Dissinger made a comeback on the team following a minor injury but didn't play much and didn't score. Starting wings Ekberg and Dhamke missed the Flensburg game with injuries so Sprenger and veteran Oprea stepped in.

By far the worst news from that game for Kiel is lineman Wiencek's injury. He will be out for 6 months due to ruptured knee ligaments. That will be a huge problem for Kiel since they are left only with Toft Hansen and the young Brazilian Ferreira. To make matters even worse, Ferreira had to go participate in Military Games in Seoul. Kiel let him go reluctantly because if they hadn't Ferreiar would have allegedly gotten arrested the first time he returned to Brazil (?!). It's therefore quite likely to expect Gislasson to use Canellas on the line for a part of the game.

That is the third long-term injury for Kiel this season, following left backfeild players Klein and Jansen's injuries and Jicha leaving the team when the season already started.

- Finding something on the market now is difficult - Kiel's director said.

Finding a new acquisition now is not difficult, it's impossible. Kiel were already in this kind of a situation this season and sorted it out it by reinstating Oprea, who was retired, and by acquiring left back veteran Mamelund, both of whom do not possess enough quality for Kiel's ambition. It will be just as difficult to find a new lineman now.

- It's always nice to beat Flensburg, at least for prestige. But these points are more important. We're going to go to Mannheim to get two points - Katsigiannis said.

- Lowen might be 4 points ahead but the season will not be over even if we lose - Gislasson said.

Wiencek's injury saw Kiel lose a lot on quality, they are without both left backfield players (Jansen and Klein) from before, while Jicha left the team unexpectedly earlier in the season. Third lineman Ferreira won't play either. There is no new information on Dahmke and Ekberg, who miss mostly likely be on the team but we have to see how fit to play they are. Dahmke is particularly important since he's currently in great form. Oprea is clearly not at the necessary level and will have a tough time handling the third game in only 7 days.
