Chievo - Lazio (4:0)

Some changes will take place in Lazio after the debacle in Leverkusen

  • Published:

The worst players of the Leverkusen match, the defender Mauricio and the wing forward Felipe Anderson, should move to the bench

Chievo started the new season with a valuable away win against Empoli, even though their game in the first half-time didn't really make you think they would. Maran's team started the match awfully, and barely managed to create a sensible offensive action after conceding a goal. It was like a different team ran out to the field in the second half-time, so Chievo scored three goals in eight minutes, and turned the result around completely. Chievo are a team who base their success on a firm defense, so the forwards being in such a great mood was a really pleasant surprise for Maran. Besides, the last time they scored three or more goals was against Livorno in April 2014.

Maran is aware that he can't hardly expect the same thing to happen against Lazio:
- The way you react after a disappointment can be awful, but I know Lazio are a great team who deserved to play the Champions League qualifiers. We have to be very compact and brave, and if we manage to do that, then we can give a hard time to any team we face. It's evident that this season started the right way when it comes to scoring, but we have to confirm that now.

After a big win in Tuscany, there likely won't be any bigger changes in Chievo's lineup, especially because Maran still can't rely on the midfielder Izco who got a serious injury. Meggiorini and Paloschi should lead Chievo's 4-4-2 formation, and the newby Mpoku and the veteran Pellissier will wait for their chance from the bench.

Lazio were drowned by Leverkusen on Wednesday, and won't get their chance in the group phase of the Champions League. Pioli had a lot of absences to deal with before that match, but that can't justify the horrible game most of his starters played. The defense didn't look compact, and Mauricio was especially bad. He concluded his lousy game by getting sent off. Lazio didn't look much better defensively, either. Felipe Anderson seemed lost, and the forward Balde Keita was completely cut off from the rest of the team. Lazio will play the rest of the European season in Europa League, and until then, Pioli has to get back to the winning track against Chievo.

Pioli is hoping they'll play well offensively against Chievo:
- We conceded an unpleasant hit against Bayer, but now we can cry or we can work harder and start over. I expect to see a real reaction against Chievo, and that we'll play a good match against an unpleasant opponent. We're playing to get three points. The championship will be tough, just like the last season when we got the unexpected third place. Seven teams are fighting for Europe, and we're one of them, we've got value and the capacity to take that fight. Criticism after Bayer? Of course we were criticized, but I'm not worried about that because I know how things work.

The situation with the injuries is still far from ideal, so Pioli can't count on the first goalie Marchetti, his best midfielder Biglia, and the forwards Đorđević and Klose. It's assumed that Lazio will use the 4-3-3 formation with Mauricio and Felipe Anderson probably taking the bench after their miserable performances against Bayer Leverkusen. Milinković-Savić could start instead of Lulić in the midfield. He joined the club this summer.
