Hapoel Jerusalem - Galatasaray (86:82)

Hapoel are close to being eliminated

  • Published:

The Isralies have 2-5, they're two wins short of the fourth place, and there are only three rounds left. Galatasaray have been in good form this whole season, but this match outcome isn't that important for them because they already got placed to the next phase, and can hardly lose the first place

Hapoel continued playing humbly in Europe, and are almost eliminated. The last week's defeat in Lithuania was their fifth in seven matches so far, and their chances of getting placed further are pretty small. The fourth place is two wins away, which means that the Israelis have to win at least two, and if possible, all three remaining matches.

Hapoel had their chance in all their defeats so far, but didn't know how to grab it. They gambled away the first half-time against Neptunas - you can't allow yourself to concede 35 points in the first 12 minutes. Neptunas were leading 35-16, and even though Hapoel played the second half-time much better, they got three points behind only two minutes before the buzzer. Rowland and Janning missed the shots for the overtime in their last offense.

- We lost a very important match. We were ready, but Neptunas scored a few three-pointers at the beginning and took an early lead. We came back in the end, but weren't efficient with our last shots - Danny Franco said.

Eliyahu and Halperin came back after injuries, but only played a few minutes with no real effect, and couldn't really help much. Hapoel basically played with seven players, and even though Fischer was brilliant (26 points and six rebounds), and Smith was very good (13 points and 10 rebounds), that wasn't enough.

Eliyahu and Halperin are expected to play more today. They carried more burden in the win against Hapoel Tel Aviv, especially Eliyahu (14 points and six rebounds). Hapoel are in a tough situation, they have to play Galatasaray and AEK, and they can't afford a mistake.

While this match is the last chance for the home team, Galatasaray don't care about the result. If not for the match against Neptunas when they got too relaxed, they'd have the perfect 7-0 after seven rounds, but even 6-1 is pretty great.

They confirmed getting placed through to the second round in the away match against AEK last weekend. They dominated offensively, as they did in most of the Eurocup matches, and after two back-to-back wins (Darussafaka in the league, AEK in the Eurocup), they added the third this weekend. They beat the tricky Selcuk in the championship. Their defensive was more brilliant than their offensive this time, and that's not often seen in the Turkish championship.

They couldn't completely avoid problems, and the coach Ergin Ataman was definitely not happy about the ups and downs his players had. After an almost perfect start of the match, 27-11 in the first quarter, they lost the second by 15, allowing the opponent to produce 32 points. The locker room speech must have been motivating, because they were much more aggressive in the second half-time, conceding only 22 in 20 minutes.

Ataman spared Guler in that match. Guler was listed for the game, but didn't play because he's dealing with a minor injury. Micov's playing great (25p), as is Lasme (20p, 11r), but other than them, only Schilb (11p, 8r, 4a) took the game seriously. McCollum had a shooting practice again - 5/14, Green missed a lot (1/5), Dorsey wasn't that dominant offensively in the paint (6p).

The away game against Hapoel Jerusalem doesn't mean much to Galatasaray right now. Their last three rounds bring them a home duel against the last team and Krasny Oktyabr who fell apart, so losing the first place isn't much of a possibility.

- Our main goal this season is to win the Eurocup - Guler (on the photo) says. He should start as the point guard today.

The first match against Hapoel saw Galata's players stuff the hoop from the 6.75m line (16/31), gaining a great advantage in the first part. They almost put their win to jeopardy later on, but they managed to solve things. Guler was brilliant with 19 points and 5/8 three-pointers then. McCollum, on the other hand, played his weakest European game. It'll be interesting to see how Ataman deals with the rotations in this duel. Considering Hapoel's style and the fact that Galatasaray don't tend to run much or force the fast rhythm. this might be an efficient match we're going to be watching.
