Philadelphia - L.A. Lakers (103:91)

The Black Mamba playing in his home town for the last time

  • Published:

Not many would care about this match if Bryant hadn't said a few days ago that he's going to retire after this season. That means he's playing in his home town for the last time tonight

Things could hardly look darker for the Philadelphia 76ers who haven't beaten anyone since March 27. They've got 28 defeats since then, including 18 this season, the longest losing streak by any of the teams in the four main sports in the USA. Brett Brown's team have a disappointing away matches run, which started with the tough defeat in Charlotte. They lost the following five matches with a single-digit difference.

- We have made progress. Our score doesn't show it yet, but people following us know it - the coach Brown said. His team score 90.8 points, 4.7 less than any other.

The 76ers concluded their tour on Sunday when they lost 92-84 in Memphis. The turnovers crushed them - they had 27 of those, which made impossible to get any positive result when combined with the 39.0% shots from the floor.

- We turned it over a few times. Missed some shots. They hit some big 3s down the stretch. That was the end of the game - Jahlil Okafor said, who had nine points (3/11) and 13 rebounds.

All the defeats made the fans very frustrated, and their numbers are thinning in the Wells Fargo Center where some tickets are now available under $10. But tonight, an extra ticket will be sought because they'll be hosting Los Angeles Lakers lead by Kobe Bryant who said a few days ago that this is definitely his last season.

- I'm hearing it's probably going to be sold out just because it's Kobe's last time playing in Philadelphia. That'll be great - Okafor said (17.4p, 8.2r).

Bryant will be playing his home town for the last time tonight. He left it in 1996 to join the NBA where he made history, helping the Lakers get the title five times.

- That'll be great. So much of my game was developed in Philadelphia - Bryant said, whose body isn't dealing with the NBA rhythm that great anymore.

- I knew it for some time. A decision like this one can't be made on outside influence. It's got to be an internal decision, and I finally accepted I can't do this job anymore. I made peace with it.

His decision was definitely made easier by the bad games at the start of the season. Bryant's average is 15.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists with 30.5% shots from the floor, including the disastrous 18/92 three-pointers.

- I think I'll think of this game as any other. I'll go out to the court and try to play my best to help us win - the coach Byron Scott believes. His team lost ten of the last 11 games, including a 6-game losing streak.

The Lakers can be optimistic because they've beaten the 76ers three times in a row, but they aren't that much of the favorite tonight. If the Sixers weren't only one defeat away from the worst start in history, the outcome would probably be irrelevant considering the noise Bryant made, but the Lakers definitely don't want to become the first team this season to be beaten by the Philadelphian team.
