PAOK trying to get into the semifinals without Margaritis, against an unpleasant team who lack the rhythm

PAOK kept their experienced players, brought Vasiliadis and the Serbian quartet. Rethymno kept only two of their last year's players, they have four Americans and should be one of the most interesting teams again

PAOK confirmed the status of the third strongest Greek team last season, behind the untouchable Olympiacos and Panathinaikos. However, they lead a great battle with Aris, AEK, and Rethymno, and the nuances decided the order. They aim for the same goals starting the new season, but they have some new faces.

Compared to the competition, PAOK didn't make many changes. They kept the core, lead with the experienced Margaritis, Tsochlas and Dedas, as well as Haralampidis and Kakaroudis, who missed most of the last season due to their injuries. All the foreigners left, including Langford, Carter, Odum, Bremer and Vaughn, who carried most of their game last season. Vasiliadis joined the team now, he played in Unicaja last season, and also the Balkanian quartet - Tepić from Partizan, the center Balaban and the duo who played the Greek league last season, the wing center Marković (Panelefsiniakos, 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds), and the back Duvnjak (Kifisia, 8.3 points). It will be interesting to see how well the Greek-Serbian combo will work in PAOK this season.

- Rethymno are a tough opponent. This is the first match of the season, they've got five young foreign players, but we have to stay focused and play our own game - the coach Markopoulos pointed out.

One of the problems PAOK have to deal with is the center Margaritis' injury, which will keep him out. Dedas had some minor problems, but he should be ready to help.

Rethymno confirmed last season that they're a team ready to fight AEK and the Thessalonikian duo. They got eliminated by PAOK in the quarterfinal, but only after a big fight that could have easily ended 2-0 for Rethymno. They plan to at least get to the playoffs this season, and try to take further steps after that.

The coach Skortopoulos is still in charge, but will have a whole new team at his disposal. Only the wing center Scahftenaar (12.3 points and 6.6 rebounds) stayed from the last season, one of the key players of the team, and the less important Doulgerakis. Everyone else is new. Rethymno now have four Americans, one Dutch (the back Kloof), and according to the press statements from the club, they should continue to be one of the most interesting teams in the Greek league.

- We tried to assemble a competitive team that will bring spectacle and basketball that the fans will be able to enjoy. We want the show, but also the results - the president Manoukarakis said.

The pre-season didn't bring much of either, but Rethymno were still piecing the puzzle and it will be interesting to keep an eye on them during the official matches. Even Skortopoulos is aware that his team lacked time to fit together.

- We didn't play enough pre-season matches, and we're not as ready as we'd want to be. The players still didn't find their place, and now we're pressuring the practices to make up for some things - Skortopoulos said after the last pre-season match against Kifisia.

This season begins where the last one ended, playing away against PAOK, and the stake is the Cup semifinal.

- Even though we're still looking for ourselves, I think we got to a phase were we can go for the win. We want to have a good start before the Saturday's match against Apollon - Rethymno's coach added in his announcement.
