Panathinaikos - Efes Pilsen (83:78)

A clash of two direct rivals on 3-3 records

  • Published:

- The most important thing to do is stop their pick with Diamantidis. They have great shooters Fotsis and Gist at 4 as well. Raduljica is in great form...We are dealing with some defensive issues and we have to fix that as soon as possible - Saric said.

Panathinaikos are on a 3-3 record at the moment and clearly far from securing the next stage. Last week's win in Zagreb only saw them make amends for the slip against Zvezda home. They know how important home games are, especially today when they are to face a team on the exact same record as them. That basically makes this a must-win game.

Road trip to Rodos didn't cause Panathinaikos any great problems. They controlled most of the game and reacted well when Kolossos started threatening in the third quarter.

- We weren't that good on the offensive end but we won this through defense - Djordjevic said. His team has not allowed more than 64 points in any of the last three games.

Haynes had his debut for the team and didn't hit any points in just under 13 minutes on the floor. He's not going to be on the team today because he can't play Euroleague until the next game. The win in Rodos saw them stay close to Oly and allowed them to shift focus to this game, which is rightfully so considered to be one of he most important ones for their Euroleague ambition.

- Efes are one of the favorites for the title. They've got a great roster, a great coach and well-experienced players who have been playing in Euroleague for years. They also have young talents like Osman, Saric and Korkmaz. They're a good quality team and we're in for a tough game - Djordjevic said and added:

- We have to be ready to respond to them physically and to control their offensive rebounding. Also, we need to stop their players in 1-on-1 game.

They acquired a combo-guard Williams from Development League a few days ago. Williams averaged 28,4 points, 6,8 rebounds and 6,0 assists on the Santa Cruz Warriors. There are talks about one more acquisitions. Neither Haynes nor Willaims are eligible to play this game.

Pappas and the less important Charalampopoulos are out as well, while Jankovic and Pavlovic practiced yesterday after struggling with injuries.

Efes were on quite a good rhythm at the start of this month. They won 9 out of 11 games before losing two home in the past week. Those defeats affected the atmosphere on the team and the overall impression. Efes first lost the nearly settled Fenerbahce match after squandering a 9-point lead in the third quarter. Things didn't get better in the league either as they hosted another rivals from Istanbul (Galatasaray) and lost.

I saw that game and it just wasn't good. Galatasaray got in control basically from the very start, Efes were down for the most part of the game and when they would get closer, there was not enough consistency in them for a comeback. That especially goes for defense, which failed to be consistent in the last quarter.

It was well known before the match that Galatasaray would get most of their points through forwards Schilba (12 p) and Micov (23p). Diebler, Osman and Brown did a bad job there as they got surprised by Lasme (21 points), who did a good job, not allowing anyone to stop him.

Efes will have another tough task there because Raduljica is capable finishing with similar numbers. The Turks would be happy if he was the only threat there today...

- We need good rebound control - coach Ivkovic said. The famous journalist David Pick said that this season is either 'title or go home' for the Serbian coach. He meant the Turkish league title, even though a lot is expected from Efes in Euroleague as well.

Every defeat for them in this group would be a big blow on their QF ambition.

- Every game, every defense, every attack are very important. We didn't get the win we expected in the last EL game but I think a win over Panathinaikos would give us the physiological advantage - the well-experienced coach said. Saric, who missed the Galatasaray game, added:

- The most important thing to do is stop their pick with Diamantidis. They have great shooters Fotsis and Gist at 4 as well. Raduljica is in great form...We are dealing with some defensive issues and we have to fix that as soon as possible.

Panathinaikos' defense is definitely overrated here, and I don't see the reason for that. They are not as powerful defensively as they used to be, especially when Diamantidis is on the court, and the pick defense with Raduljica is not great either. Efes will definitely attack that with Heurtel and Granger. PAO have conceded at home over 73.5 against Darussafaka, Zvezda, Kuban, Barcelona, and they limited weak teams like Stalmet, Zalgiris and Karsiyaka under that margin. On the other side we have a team that have, in 16 Euroleague games, went over in 15 and were limited under the margin once last week against Fener's strong team, and even then they were limited to 73. Of Efes's eight away games, they haven't scored less than 77 once and we should respect that.
