Paraguay opened the South American Championship with a win over Bolivia yesterday. That was expected but not convincing. They were just 4 points ahead at half time and later won by some 20 points. However, Bolivia are one of the worst teams in South America. This performance by Paraguay is not a good thing, it's just the opposite. Paraguay's team is weaker this year than it was two years ago. They lost Ortiz, point guard Martinez and center Araujo (their top scorer and top rebounder from two years ago) is in Argentina with his club. They have not done brilliantly in test games, having lost to Brazil B 63-87 and 46-83. Peru are one of the worst teams in South America and Paraguay still won only by 5 and 15 points.
Venezuela host this tournament. They have 10 players who won FIBA American last season and the South American Championship. They trashed Ecuador by 60 points and didn't even try their best. They are very motivated and the coach said this is a chance for some players to make it to Olympics. They have been together for over a month.
