Spirou are the only Belgian representative in the FIBA Champions League except for Oostende, but I think at least two or three Belgian teams should be there instead. Spirou this season can't be compared to Spirou in the last or the season before that one. The new coach Bastianini came from Liege where his team played the run-and-gun ball, with a very soft defense, and now the same applies to Spirou. They started the Belgian championship with a home defeat to Liege (who decreased their budget over summer and don't belong to the Top 6 of the Belgian basketball). Liege won 91-68 and then Spirou lost to Brussels, and then barely beat Limburg, and then lost a home game to Okapi this weekend.
Those three defeats ended in 89 or more points allowed, and the win against Limburg ended with them having 80. They barely beat the third-league Sijsele (77-74) in the round of 16 of the Belgian cup. The team are completely new, their defense is weak, there's no discipline in the offense. To make things worse, their center Tumba and Iarochevtich are injured, and the starting back-shooter Shepherd is out, too. The center substitutes aren't bad, but they didn't show much at the beginning of the season, and I don't think they can match the strongest European teams.
The first one is Besiktas who assembled a fine roster, the coach Sarica mostly won the pre-season games, only lost to Partizan at the beginning and later to Efes. They started the Turkish championship with two routine wins against Kolejliler and Ušaka. They've got a lot of offensive talent, players like Roll, Weems, Thompson, and Strawberry, who can definitely use Spirou's defensive problems. They look much more serious defensively than the Belgians, and that's the biggest difference between these two teams.
