Tobias Kamke - Marton Fucsovics (1:6 6:3 6:2)

Chardy blaims lack of practice for defeat by young Hungarian

  • Published:

Fucsovics lost his serve only once to Chardy and therefore came to his first ATP career win. Kamke started with 0-2 but a turnover came quickly as well as a comfortable win against a tough home veteran.

Some tennis players wait a long time while some get it in their first try. Fucsovics went through the qualifications, earned his first ATP appearance and right away won a match. This makes the 21-year-old go up on the ATP table and we can soon expect his arrival to the Top 200.

The young Hungarian left a good impression in the qualifications. He won almost 90% of the points on his first serve. Yesterday he showed that this was no coincidence. He did not win as many points but was keeping his serve without problems. He let the more experienced Chardy have just one break, while having 72% of points won on his second serve. In the first set they both had one break-point but the Hungarian is the one to break on his chance. He had a break advantage in the second set. The home player managed to tie the score but could not put pressure on his young opponent. Chardy not once had the lead in the tie-break and Fucsovics made the second match-ball count.

- I am ecstatic, of course. This is the first time I made it the main draw of an ATP tournament and right away I beat a Top 50 player - said the 21-year-old Hungarian while Chardy did not hide the reasons for his defeat:

- He made the most out of some chances I let him have and I gave him too many easy ball. This is what happens when you don't practice as much as you should before a match.

Kamke doesn't have that problem. Last week he played a strong challenger in Luxembourg and took the title just like last year. He opened this tournament with a tough opponent. Gicquel has wins from their head-to-head matches and came here through the qualifications. The 36-year-old is back in the Top 100 and this is a good indication of his current form.

The experienced Frech started the match much better. He was off to a 2-0 lead and had 40-15 on his serve. After that he did not win a game until the end of the set. This is a kind of a typical thing for the German because he struggles on his serve. His return game is much better, even in indoor conditions. The second set also had its ups and downs. Kamke lead with 2-0 and the French took three games in a row, followed by a large number of consecutively won games for the German, who won the match in the end.

Today the young Hungarian will have a much tougher match since Kamke is not going to let him have easy service games like Chardy did yesterday. This is a great opportunity for the German's first indoor ATP quarterfinal since Stockholma two years ago.

Fuchsovics achieved his first ATP win in his first ATP appearance. Though it sounds great, he only won because Chardy played badly. The Frenchmen complained about the lack of training and too soft play, and the young Hungarian used the opportunity. I'll give him that, but he will have trouble today with keeping his service on the same level as yesterday. Kamke won an indoor challenger last week. Here he started with 0-2, and ended up winning easily against Gicquel. The same Gicquel left the Hungarian on only three games three weeks ago. The German is confident now, and it is not easy to get this kind of an ATP quarterfinal chance. I believe he will be highly motivated. He has far more quality than the Hungarian, especially on his return and I expect him to win in two sets. Fucsovics's last seven defeats were in two sets.
