Carlos Berlocq - Florian Mayer (7:5 4:6 5:7)

It should have been a German derby in the quarterfinals, a meeting of Davis Cup colleagues who defeated Brazil last week, but Berlocq spoiled the party. In reality, it was mostly Kohlschreiber's fault because he couldn't force his rhythm on his opponent, and later had knee issues which forced him to forfeit the match.

Kolshreiber played last weekend on Saturday only. He skipped the Sunday match because he wasn't ready for the potential five-setter. He had a wisdomtooth operation and the antibiotics created some stomach problems that have worn him out. Berlocq was very luck this week, and doesn't hide it. In the first round he played against Vesely, a young Czech that only played on clay for almost the entire season. In the second round the German forfeited the game.

Even though the German had knee issues from the second set, the Argentinian couldn't force a break-point. The German won 89 percent of points on his first serve, but he couldn't move properly so Berlocq won all of his service games with ease. Kolshcreiber probably believed that he could win the game in the tie break, but the Argentinian evened the score and the German soon forfeited the game:

- This is my first ATP quarterfinal in an indoor tournament. Now it's time to rest - said the Argentinian over a social network.

Mayer had minor problems against Herbert in the second set of his first round match. It was the result of a lax attitude, which he didn't repeat in the second round. Lacko is not in form, but indoors the conditions were for his liking. He couldn't do much nevertheless. 

The Slovak finished the match without forcing a single break point. Mayer won 85 percent of the points on his first serve and added 5 aces, and won almost half of the points on return. A quality match that followed a statement he gave after the Davis Cup on Friday when he said:

- This was the best Davis Cup match in my career.

In reality, this is a great chance for Mayer. He had an easy draw in the first round, and in the second round he avoided Chardy and now Kolshcreiber forfeited the game. This is his first indoor ATP quarterfinal and with his style  there won't be a lot of chances on the return. The German destroyed Bellucci with low balls at the Davis Cup, and the Argentinian could gave a similar problem because he plays with too much spin for these conditions.

Whichever way I put it, it is hard to understand such a high rate on Mayer. Berlocq reached his first indoor quarterfinal on this level thanks to circumstances. First it was Vesely, a young Czech who spends most of the season on clay and has problems on open concrete as well. Then it was Kohlschreiber who held the serve for the entire second set although he could barely move. Meanwhile, Mayer had an excellent indoor appearance in Davis Cup against Belluci who plays similar to the Argentinian. The German destroyed Belluci then with low balls and today I expect a similar thing. The Argentinian will do little on the return and defending cannot work all the time indoors. If no new lucky circumstances occur for Berlocq, I expect a strong win of the German with spread.
