Benjamin Becker - Albano Olivetti (6:7 6:3 6:1)

French giant lands 20 aces in two sets

  • Published:

Olivetti saved all four break-points, and he needed only one break for win in straight sets. Becker got his victory in just an hour as Paire lost control again, turning his own crown against him in the end

Ivo Karlovic was sent packing after the first round, but there are two other giants still in the tournament. Both are French players, and one of them is Olivetti. He has a mysterious recovery from a long-term elbow injury behind him, which we commented on in the first-round preview. He has played very well in the last two months, got to the US Open first round and is clearly full of confidence at the first indoor tournament of the season.

Zverev got into the main draw through qualifiers, but he was completely powerless on his serve. He had four break-points, but those went away in a flash. The towering Frenchman landed 20 aced in 12 service games, losing only three points in his service games. More importantly, he took his one break opportunity in this match. Even though they played 25 games, he needed only 75 minutes for a win, which clearly points to the brevity of rallies in this match.

Becker didn't take too long to finish either. It was already over within an hour against Paire, who left the court whistled by the home crowd. The young Frenchmen has gained somewhat of a reputation for such displays. He complained of his back during the US Open, last week at an exhibition it was a finger, but in most cases the culprit is his unstable attitude.

Even though Paire is capable of some beautiful winners, especially on the backhand side, he can lose his nerve quite often. A couple of misses, a bad call, and Paire is done. It was the same case this time. He quickly entered into arguments with the chair umpire, earning a caution for unsportsmanlike conduct. Becker took advantage of this. The German allowed only one break-point, which he did not save, but he had plenty of chances on the return. He showed no spectacular moves like his opponent did, but he won 83% first serve points and converted half of his break-point chances (3/6).

The German will need to be patient in the next match as well. Olivetti is likely to score double digits in the ace department, and who knows how many service winners to boot, but the key thing is to remain calm. Zverev wasn't, and he lost his serve from the only break point. Becker, however, is a more experienced player, and that makes him the favorite today.

Olivetti landed 20 aces over two sets in the first round. He held on to his serve until the end, saving all four break-points. Zverev was a tricky opponent for him as he tends to block the serve, and then rush forward. Becker is far more aggressive, which is why he is good for this bet. Not only is he too aggressive on the return, but on his own serve as well, which is why major ups and downs in his performance shouldn't come as a surprise. He showed those last week in Luxembourg, too. I know what to expect from Olivetti and he can pull of two or three service winners per game against anyone in these conditions. I expect he will do the same to Becker, and I wouldn't be surprised if the German gives away a game or two with his approach.
