Grzegorz Panfil - Diego Sebastian Schwartzman (4:6 6:3 5:7)

Home player Panfil is playing the best tournament of his career

  • Published:

The Polish has won five consecutive matches without losing a set. He hasn't lost a single service game in the main draw and his self-confidence is sky-high. Schwartzman put in two convincing performances, beating two Italians and continuing his good form that he had exhibited in Banja Luka

The wild-card experiment has failed. Three of those have been granted to home players and neither one of them managed to win a single set. But Panfil, on the other hand, is responsible for the fact that the stands are teeming with supporters. The Polish achieved his fifth consecutive win, if we take into consideration the qualifying rounds, and he hasn't lost a single set. To make things more impressive, from the very beginning of the tournament Panfil claimed this could be his week.

In the first round Pashanski beat Montanes, whose most memorable moment of the match had been the smashing of his racket. The Serbian player achieved one of his rare victories this season but the the elimination of tournament's first seed has instigated the Polish to be very cautious. Panfil was focused from the beginning till the end of the match and that is the reason why he didn't lose a service game the whole match. It was another impressive performance from the home player, who dominated the entire court with his service and backhand.

- There were two games in which I trailed 15-40 but my service didn't let me down. I think my game was very mature. I changed the rhythm, kept the ball on court, while my attacking was timely. Tactically, I did everything right -  was Panfil's proud comment, while it seems five matches that he has already played should not represent a problem:

- The qualifying rounds have helped me a lot because I had a chance to get accustomed to the surface and to the balls. The first two matches were fairly easy, only the last match in the qualifying rounds was a bit more difficult. None of it has left a mark on me, I don't feel tired.

His next opponent is Argentinian Schwartzman, who played Banja Luka semifinal last week and who kept his momentum here in Poland. In both matches he convincingly beat the Italians. First he had eliminated veteran Di Mauro and then the talented Cecchinato. Although the Argentinian is known for his soft service, he allowed only one break-point. The Italian seized the opportunity but it was to no avail.

Schwartzman won the match in 72 minutes. The key of the match was the game on the second service. The Italian won only one third of the points played after the second service and that is where the Argentinian built his pressure. He had nine beak-points and won slightly less than half (4/9). Panfil is aware of his opponent's good form but he has no fear:

- We practised together one time in South America but we haven't played against each other so I don't know what to expect. I will start preparing for the match immediately, so by the time we start playing I will have known everything I need to know about him.

This is undoubtedly the best performance of the season by the 25-year-old Polish. He has had two quarterfinals and a couple of memorable victories but here he has won five matches in a row without conceding a single set. His service has been excellent, having had 10 aces against Pashanski. The Serbian had been breaking easily Montanes' service in the previous match but in this encounter he could do nothing. This is why Panfil is the "dark horse" of the tournament. The stadium is expected to be teeming with supporters, as it was the case in the second round when the home player performed.

Since the start of the tournament it seemed like this would be the best tournament of the career for Panfil. He didn't get an invitation, but he used that to his advantage. He filled himself with confidence during the three very convincing victories in the qualifiers, and his performances in the main tournament were also very good. He is probably playing the best tennis of his life and today he will have Schwartzman on the other side of the net. He hasn't lost a single service game in the first two rounds and yesterday he used a very smart tactics against Pahsanski, a player that won against the first seeded player (Montanes) in the round before. Schwartzman played in the final last week and he defeated two Italian players this week so that is why odds for him winning today are pretty low. As it was mentioned, Panfil is playing the best tennis of his career and he should be able to take at least one set today, and possibly even win the match. Schwartzman is well-known for his good plays on clay, but his game is much more dependent on his opponents mistakes than on his own good shots. Panfil won a couple of matches similar to this one in the last couple of months and today he will have the crowd on his side. That is also an important factor as the atmosphere on the challengers is very similar to those on Davis Cup matches.
