Lucie Safarova - Samantha Stosur (6:4 6:4)

Safarova has a streak of seven wins, three against Stosur

  • Published:

The Czech obviously got a lot of self-confidence after she won in Quebec and she also has a solution for the Australian. Stosur won against Kimiko Date by force, after the veteran lost 5-3 in the second set

As in most of sports, in tennis the coaches often pay the price for their player's failures. Stosur won the US Open and no one can take that away from here but this year she stagnated. To an experienced player like her, the Grand Slams carry the biggest importance and the furthest point she reached in them this season is third round. The price of that failure was payed by David Taylor, her coach for many years.

Although she claimed she can manage on her own, she immediately dropped in the first round of US Open against a young and unproven American. Anyone who has seen the Australian at least once during a match, definitely noticed the muscles. Some of her colleagues went as far as to say Sam play like a man, especially because of the serve and the powerful forehand. The Australian doesn't hide that she puts a lot to her physical preparedness:

 - I am very serious in training, even on the serve. A series of serves on the outside, then in the body and then on T. There is the coach or the sparring partner so I have to react on the return. That's how it's done for two hours. My trainings are very exhausting.

Here she won two times in a row. After having trouble with Cornet, she again had problems, but it was that physical part that decided. The Australian has the strength for a marathon while Date Krumm is the oldest active player on Tour. The Japanese took the lead 2-1 with a break but soon it was 5-2 for Stosur who took the lead in sets. In the second Date had 5-3 but she didn't even manage to reach a set point. The Australian came back and won the match through a one-sided tie-break.

 - It was a pretty tough match against Kimiko. In the second set I played under pressure because she reached a break, but I was good in the tie-break - said Stosur after the match and added:

 - I hope that I will look and run like her when I'm 42. After that I had a lot of work with the media, which I guess is usual when you play against a home player.

Safarova has a streak of seven wins. She won the fast Quebec indoors and she manages well in Tokyo too. After the thriller with Hercog in the first round, Vinci went down easier, at least as far as the score is concerned. The Italian had 3-0 in the first set and 2-0 in the second, but she didn't win either of them. Although the Czech didn't have her day with the serve (eight double faults) on the return she was better than usual.

No matter the starting leads of Vinci, Safarova came back in the sets quickly. She had 13 break points in 11 return games which is a lot for her. It was an atypical match for her. There were a lot of break points and a poor score on the first serve. This season she lost a lot of such matches but her confidence grew after Canada:

 - Tokyo and Beijing are on the way, strong tournaments on which I want a good result. Maybe it is only now that my time is coming. On the start of the season I lost too many matches I shouldn't have.

Now Stosur awaits here against whom she has positive experiences. She is leading 6-2 between them and she won the last three matches, two of them this year.

It is not a coincidence that Safarova leads 6-2 in their head-to-head matches. The Australian has had a lot of problems here with the two-arm backhand, and she practically pulled all the way through her career by playing to her stronger forehand side. As a left-hander, Safarova is awkward for Stosur as most of her balls go to the backhand side of right-handed players. The Czech is especially dangerous here as she has quality serves, which means she will get a lot of soft return balls from Stosur's backhand. However, the key reason why to play on Safarova is her form. She won Quebec and is currently on a run of seven wins in a row. She finally regained self-confidence and is on a roll. Another piece of information goes in her favour. Until the tournament in Canada she had only 15 wins in the season, and two of them were against the Australian. She won all three tie-breaks in those matches and that was when she didn't have as much self-confidence as she has now. Everything points to another Safarova win.
