Pablo Cuevas - Nikolay Davydenko (6:3 6:4)

Davydenko doesn't know what he wants anymore

  • Published:

Cuevas has not played for two years due to a knee injury and this is his first swing after recovering from his injury. Davydenko wants to play, but then changes his mind. It seems that he fantasizes about leaving tennis and then about returning to the top 20

Injuries often dictate how a player's career progresses and a 6 month injury can result in a big drop on the ranking list. In the case of Cuevas the situation was even more difficult because he didn't play for two years due to a knee injury. Four years ago he was in the top 50 and now he is fighting for to return to the top 400. In such a predicament you can either start from zero and play the qualification of challengers or use the protected ranking and try your luck in strong tournaments. Cuevas chose the second option.
He played two challengers in order to test his knee and then moved on to Roland Garros. He defeated Mannarino and took a set off of Simon, but then took only three games until the end of the match. He lost a lot of energy in R1, but he concluded that his knee is holding up. His next tournament was the USO, where he forfeited the match against Tipsarevic at 2-1 for the Serb.
- I was well prepared, but didn't train too much. I didn't do a lot in three months. I am very happy because I played over two hours - said Cuevas then, but now he claims that he is ready:

- Although there are some problems, I have been training very well in the last couple of weeks. I am happy that I will play the Asian swing where I will take part in three tournaments. This is a very important period for me and I relish the challenge.

That is a totally different attitude then the one he had in Grand Slams, where he said that he doesn't care about the expectations or results. The big question is what motivates Davydenko. The Russian was saying for months that he is motivated, but his actions during the season show otherwise. After a weak clay season, he skipped the grass season. He claimed that he had to have quality training and that if he wants the second part of his season to be successful, he needs to take a break. It seemed that he was right, but Montreal was probably more of a lucky break than anything else.

In Cincinnati he could have won against Del Potro, but didn't have the confidence to take him out. At the USO Dodig only allowed him 9 games, and the Russian finally admitted:

- I am disappointed. In Grand Slams you can't win with only a couple of great points and it often depends on how your opponent plays. Unfortunately, I felt that I can't win and that hurts the most. I wanted to leave tennis, but I can't do it. I still believe One good Masters 1000 result and I can get back in the Top 20. I need to work more, that's what you realize sooner or later.

His statement is proof enough. The Russian doesn't know what he wants. He always had the reputation of a hardworking tennis player, but with his age it is a difficult tempo to hold. He has some good patches but that is not enough to consistently win matches. Davydenko is aware of that.

As for Cuevas, he is a special case. He is talented enough and has shown that in his last tournament. The question is can his knee hold up, but his statement is reassuring. He could well defeat Davydenko, who looks as if he had a long break. He defeated the Russian in Moscow three years ago.

Cuevas is now obviously finally ready, because he signed up for three tournaments in a row. During the last months, he used the protected ranking only on Grand Slams and without enough preparation. Regardless, he beat Mannarino and took a set from SImon and Tipsarevic. Davydenko is off his game. He is lost somewhere between the end of his career and unreal ambitions regarding the Top 20. After New York, he admitted that the end might be near. I think that a set is certainly better than handicap, because Cuevas is not a player of who I expect to win serves. Also, considering Davydenko's play, I would not be surprised if he lost a set due to a bad streak and then later outplays the Uruguayan. In short, Cuevas, even when unprepared, was taking sets from players better than him, and Davydenko often lost sets from players of far lesser skill. Also, Cuevas surprised Davydenko three years ago in Moscow by winning two sets. The Russian was favored by more people back then than now.
