Jurgen Melzer - Federico Delbonis (6:3 6:2)

Melzer will ask Melzer for advice

  • Published:

The Austrian didn't really do brilliantly in the first round, but still beat his opponent in two sets. Delbonis took advantage of the draw to reach his first ever ATP indoor quarter final

Meltzer is prone to losing the matches he shouldn't be losing. It happened two weeks ago in Davis Cup, it happened here in doubles match. Despite winning 13 points more than their opponents and having better stats in every aspect, Knowle and he still lost.

The Austrian hasn't been doing well against Zverev. He lost twice, and won once after two tie breaks. Zverev managed to win a break, but lost his service game twice near the finish of the set. They both lost one service game in the second set, which is not really usual considering they are both good servers. The German didn't manage mentally again, having lost service game to stay in the match. Yes, Meltzer can be happy with his returns, but three lost service games and only one break point saved don't seem good enough for the rest of the tournament.

- It was not easy. I struggled and didn't play my best. I'll have to call my brother to ask him for some advice because he played him this season. I know he's left-handed and playing Zverev who's also left-handed was a good thing.

Not many expected to see the Argentinian reach indoor tournament quarter final. That would have been a surprise even if the tournament was a challenger. Granted, he played a junior player who was given a wild card on account of reaching the Wimbledon final, but then beat Pospisil in the second round match. The Canadian got injured during the last rally of the Davis Cup final and expected to be out longer. He is back, he beat Hanescu who wasn't playing so well - the Argentinian took advantage of it.

Pospisil failed to win any of the six break point chances he had, while the Argentinian had only one. Even though Pospisil had better first and second serve percentages and had 9 aces, he lost both tie breaks easily. That was a complete mental failure since he dominated the serving in both sets, but then won only three points in two tie breaks.

- It was really tough because Vasek's serves are great. Luckily, I used my opportunities in tie breaks - said Delbonis after reaching his first ever ATP indoor quarter final.

Delbonis can't play indoors. This quarter finals is the result of a favourable draw. First he beat a junior player with a wild card, then Pospisil lost the match agaainst him in a very unfortunate manner. The Canadian gave his opponent only one break-ball, but failed to break the Argentinian's serve (0/6 on break points). He succumbed to pressure in the tie-breaks, played nervously and lost the match. Melzer is too experienced to miss this opportunity. These are the Argentine's only two ATP wins of the season outside clay courts. The Austrian has the return and the game that comes to the fore in these conditions. He already beat one left-handed player in the second round and he will be ready for another one. I do not see how he can lose a set against the Argentine clay specialist who has already spent his luck in this tournament.
