Juan Martin Del Potro - Marcos Baghdatis (4:6 6:4 6:3)

Del Potro complained about fatigue due to the long flight

  • Published:

The Argentinian was unsure, whether he was going to play here or not, but his left wrist healed. He came here with a wild card after 37 hours of flight. Baghdatis came to Asia last week, but lost to Wawrinka again

When Del Potro won the US Open, many thought it was just the beginning of a fantastic career of a player who has all the prerequisites to become the World's No. 1 one day. The Argentinian showed us many times what wonders he is capable of, but never the continuity. One of the main reasons is a severe injury of the left wrist. He had problems also on this year's US Open, so often performed a one-handed backhand slice to rest his left arm. Against Hewitt, that tactic did not work, even though he did not want to use the injury as an excuse. However, he had to take a break, so that is why he missed Davis Cup, even though it was the semi-finals. After that, he started to train and recently announced that he accepts the wild card for Tokyo:

- I confirm that I'll be playing on the Asian tour. It's been a few years since I've played in those tournaments. My left wrist is far better and I can hit a two-handed backhand with full force again.

Baghdatis has no injuries, but is not in shape. Before the US Open series of tournaments, he had 11 losses in a row and that affected his self-confidence. That is why he was losing even matches he could have won. Two weeks ago, he lost to Tursunov in two tie-breaks, and last week he was beaten again by Wawrinka, for the second time in a month. This time he was not even close to being his match.

- The season was not the way I wanted it to be. It was very bad in the middle of the year, but now it is better - said the Cypriot optimistically before the start of the tournament, while the Argentinian complained about the long trip:

- Tokyo is far away from home, but I had a warm welcome. My flight took 37 hours, so I feel tired. However, I'm happy and grateful for the card.

To make matters worse, he was unlucky in the draw again. Even though this is the 500 series, which means a strong competition, he could have had it a lot easier. He is defending the last year's semi-finals, which is worth a 180 points, so he is probably going to finish outside the Top 50, and at the beginning of the year, he planned to return to the Top 20, but there is still hope. The Argentinian has not played since the US Open and the Cypriot put up some resistance him now and then. This season it was 7-6 in the third set for the Argentinian, in the moments when Baghdatis already entered his bad streak. The previous two matches Del Potro lost and surely is not happy with the draw as well.

It is hard for me to imagine that Del Potro can play well already in the first match. He did not know whether he was going to play here or not until the end, and I cannot say he played well in the US. It is questionable how well his wrist is, because it is a serious injury. He was winning due to his reputation. Baghdatis, however, has no health issues, but has issues with his shape. Actually, more with self-confidence. That is why I will not go for him, but I sure am going for an over. The Argentinian has nine overs in a row for this margin and two US Open matches, which had more than three sets because he did not have the rhythm. Baghdatis has good experience against him, especially if we are looking at this bet. All four head-to-heads went into over and the Cypriot is defending the last year's semi-finals. So, the faster court are fine to him. It smells like three sets, but this margin is okay even for two.
